Hiya! Ive had my baby girl for almost a year now. I know shes definitely albino but im unsure if she has any recessive traits
I dont know much about her except the clutch she was in had a normal and another albino but less vibrant more pastel looking
Her belly is see through (kind of) so i was wondering if thats normal of albinos
The main reason why id like to know is just a heads up when i breed her in a couple years time, i want to pick a male that will hopefully create some rarer clutches
Ive got some pictures from when i first got her below,
Shes very vibrant
Without knowing the parents it isn’t really possible to tell whether she carries any recessive traits, as recessives don’t show on the phenotype. As far as im aware there aren’t any known recessive het markers in hoggies, and hoggie colours tend to vary quite a bit within the same morph. But im not an expert, so someone else might be able to see something that im not
She’s cute! I don’t work with hoggies and won’t presume to give an ID. If there’s any way to reach out to the breeder, it would be worth asking about the parents’ genetics.
Welcome to the community! Your girl is Albino, no other visual traits. Albinos can range from extreme red to quite pale, so as @autumngeckos mentioned, a lot of variation in individual morphs sometimes. As for other traits, there’s no way to know if she has any hets, aside breeding her.
Also a heads up before you decide to breed down the road, hognoses are, at least imo, not a good starter species if you’re a first time breeder. In the wild their diet consists of mostly amphibians, so getting hatchlings to eat can be quite difficult. There’s also always a risk with pairing that due to the size difference, the female can injure or in some cases even kill/eat the male. Female hoggies also seem to like to snack on their eggs sometimes. If this is your first species you’ll be breeding, do all the research possible before you start. Read books, browse hobby spaces online, talk to breeders, save money, and make sure you have resources to fall back on if you find yourself facing something you’re not sure how to handle.
4 years ago at day of purchase, she was just a few months old.
My hoggie was pretty bright as a hatchling with high whites around each spot, but as they age they will lose those vibrant colors a little bit as she’s much more yellowed out now and her vibrant red spots are more orange-ish. The transparent areas of the belly is just where the black pigment of a would be Normal hoggie is lacking because of the Albinism gene, this can also be observed in the tongue since they normally have black tongues. The only way you can know if there are other genes that are Heterozygous is by breeding her.
