I recently purchased this young corn snake for my son. His name is Mushu and he is about 12 to 15 inches long. I am wondering what morph type he is and what his approximate age might be.
Gorgeous. Maybe a yearling born last summer. Impossible to say from pics. I’m bad at morph ID, but my guess is Ultramel Stripe, maybe with Tessera too.
Can you post some pics in natural light? Definitely stripe plus something, maybe caramel, maybe tessera!
I had “Amber Stripe” first. But changed it.
Welcome to the community! I’d agree that Mushu is about a year old, if judging by average growth rates and feeding schedules. They grow at very different rates, though, and he could be older depending on his care before you purchased him.
As for morph, he is such a clean, pretty stripe! Although tessera does clean the stripe pattern up, I’d say Mushu doesn’t have tessera based on the lighter stripes visible on the sides near the tail in the first picture.
I also agree with the lighting issue—it’s hard to tell colors for sure. If your little corn snake is mostly yellow and brown plus some greyed-down tones, then caramel. If there are some brighter oranges, then possibly hypo without caramel. As Dean said, he could also be caramel + hypo which would be an amber. That would look mostly yellow with hardly any browns. If he’s very light in color, but doesn’t have red pupils (he doesn’t appear to have them), he could be ultramel as Dean suggested first.
Congratulations and welcome to the joys of corn snakes! Mushu is adorable. As others have said, it’s impossible to say how old he is. My yearlings are generally 18-25" but it can really vary. Genetics plays a part as does frequency and size of meals, along with the individual’s own appetite.
Natural light will help a lot for telling what morph Mushu is. My first impression is something with Caramel, certainly Stripe and possibly with Tessera. Eyes look to be Amber or Golddust maybe, but natural light will help a lot.
Again, congrats and welcome!
Thank you. When I got him I was told to feed him a pinky once a week. He has had 3 feedings with me and does pretty good with pinkies, I don’t think he can take anything much bigger, maybe a fuzzy but not sure of the size difference.
Yes I will post some pics in natural light once I get a day off. He’s not socialized yet so it might get interesting. What would be the best method so I can capture his best colors.
