Crested gecko feeding help

So my past crested gecko passed due to an unknown illness. When i saw him he had a bunch of gunk on his feet from his food and prevented him from climbing. I was a first time owner and had no idea this had happened until after. I asked a group on FB and just got a bunch of hate about me “not caring correctly” but this is an nocturnal animal and im a student so i couldn’t stay up until midnight to make sure he eats. Im planning on getting another one next year after ive done alot more research(even thoigh i done a bunch from the first time)and im afraid this will happen again with his feet so i want to hamd feed him but i know its bad for them to become dependent. Is there a way i could prevent him from steping in his food?

Most crestie people on FB are super self-righteous unfortunately, im sorry you went through that though  There isn’t a way to avoid it completely but it also isn’t a common issue in otherwise healthy geckos, so I wouldn’t worry too much. If you use a smaller dish, and feed him from a feeding ledge, id assume he’d be less likely to step in it though

Sorry about your fb experience. I don’t do any other social media other this place. This is a fantastic community with caring and kind people. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. You won’t be treated badly I promise!

I found a feeding ledge that works well on The Bean Farm website. You can also order disposable feeding cups that fit the feeder.

Also when you do get another crestie don’t hesitate to disturb it during the day even if you have to dig it out of its hiding spot. I believe it’s a good idea to do a little health check up once in awhile just to make sure there are no issues that at least you can visibly see……

Good luck with your next one!:blush:
