Crested Gecko Genetics

Hello all! First post on here, it seems this site gets more traffic than some others, so i hope someone can help!

I have been breeding cresties for 2 years (this is my second) with a pairing of a dalmatian harlequin (male) and a dalmation(ish) high expression lilywhite (female) producing some nice babies - relatively low expression lillies that look like a perfect mix of mum and dad, I will try to add a photo if I can! BUT i had a baby last year, that looks like neither really, and is VERY red, I would like a rough morph identification if anyone feels like helping! (Mum and dad are first two pics, baby in question is the bottom two)
TIA

Do you have photos of any of the siblings? Mom looks possibly het empty back, that would explain the lack of pattern down the dorsal. From the photo it looks like a yellow het EB lilly white, basically just a higher expression of the mom.

Yeah, i will stick some up!
I bought mum as a high expression lily white, who obviously had a few dalmatian spots too, and dad was given to me at 6 months old, from a family friend, who had no interest in the genetics, so i havent a clue about him! Are you saying that the baby is a het empty back lilywhite? Just for clarification!
Also is someone able to please explain if lilywhites can be bred to lilywhites?
The 4th picture is the baby in question again!

Possibly yeah, the mom is definitely Het EB as the siblings you’ve posted all seem to be as well, and the dad definitely is not.

Now, the expression of the baby is not usual, usually het EB LWs look like the mom, with the stippled line down the back, so it could also be something else entirely. But since the mom is het EB, the baby being so as well would be my assumption, until proven otherwise.
Have a guy myself that has a similar look down the back that im gonna prove out next season.

The baby could have some red-base influence or tangerine influence in there, but it could also just be baby-orange. It’s not uncommon for babies to hatch looking very red/orange but then fade as they grow. However, the dad looks pretty orangey, so he could have some tangerine in there.

The LW trait can be considered what is known as a lethal recessive, meaning that while one copy of the trait is fine, two copies will result in unviable babies. So two LWs should not be bred together, as about 25% of their eggs will either fail, or if they do hatch, have a very short-lived, most likely not very comfortable, lives.

Thank you so much for the explanation! The baby gecko in question is now over a year old, so i guess thatsl rules out the baby orange, and she has only gotten redder, it might be worth mentioning her hatching story is very odd:
We went on holiday for two weeks, left them with someone who isnt a reptile person, so wouldnt necessarily have noticed when her egg completely caved in, we got the geckos back, and concluded that if the only thing we had lost over a period of 2 weeks, with no incubator, and someone who hadnt a clue what went wrong, we were doing well, i put a wet paper towel over it in the hopes of it re-plumping, and to my surprise it did, after no movement and seemingly no growth, i decided that if it hadnt hatched in a week (when it would be overdue) i would freeze it and cut it open to see how development had gone, as i was curious, but shocking everyone, it hatched, and out popped a very odd baby, who continues to eat and thrive!
(Sorry for the speel!)
Thank you for taking the time and effort to work out what is going on, i really appreciate it!

Depends on how big she is, how their colours change depends more on their size rather than their age - they usually change all the way into the 20g range, sometimes into the 30s and 40s as well.

Like this girl, left is when i got her at around a year and 10g, right is when i sold her a year later at around 50g.

Happy yours made it, crestie eggs are resilient! Always incubate till there’s no debate, if there’s no mould or sweating, it’s often fine

Thats true, this girl wont be going anywhere, so a couple of years down the line when she is bigger i will post a couple of pictures :slightly_smiling_face: also completely different note, if i am looking at selling an animal, is it best to offer it back to the original breeder or not? I seem to work it out :woman_shrugging:

Hmm not unless you discussed it with them? I personally wouldn’t expect anyone to sell any of the geckos i’ve sold back to me, unless we specifically agreed on it when they were sold  Most breeders also sell animals that don’t fit into their projects, or that they can’t keep for lineage reasons, so they likely aren’t interested in getting them back.
