Desert bioactive plants?

Me and the hubby are still planning for a Bearded Dragon, however we are still in the works of actually getting a proper enclosure set up.

My question is what would be good plants to put in a “Desert” environment that are also safe for Beardies?
I’ve already heard that certain types of cacti and Aloe Vera plants are safe, or even air plants (Bromeliad tillandsia), are these actually safe for Beardies? Anyone got any other plants that might be ok?

If you check out SerpaDesigns on YouTube, he created a bioactive set up for a beardie 6ish (?) months ago, and you’ll find a ton of info on safe substrate, plants, clean up crew to use. It might also help with other things like setting up lighting, heating, etc.

Ah, thank you!

I watch SerpaDesign often and didn’t even think to check there lol. I’ll check it out! I also saw some stuff on The Biodude’s website but I know not all of the plants they have available are meant for a Desert hot & dry environment, I’ll have to look more in depth into it.

Best of luck to you! And we’d all love pictures once you guys have the enclosure set up and get yourself a beardie!

I haven’t added any “plants” etc., in Obie’s tank yet because I think he might “run” over them. He kinda plows ghis way around but it could be because he’s blind……

However I think a few desert like plants would be cool. Different kinds of succulents would work well maybe?

I would think succulents would be nice but I know some of those kinds of plants produce a “milk” substance when injured that is poisonous to humans and animals like dogs and cats, I would be devastated to unknowingly add something like that to a Beardies enclosure and have them end up eating it
(I could be mistaken but thick-leafed plants come to mind when I think of the plants that produce that stuff, I used to have some a loooong time ago but I can’t remember what they were)

Oh yeah that’s right! I’m not a plant person! You can certainly tell that! I am sorry because I did not mean to bring up something dangerous!!! :weary:

You’re ok! I just want to be really careful about what kinds of plants are used. I’m much more well versed in tropical plants and enclosure setups, Desert setups are a whole new game for me lol.

Nonsense!! You spitballing good ideas is not a bad thing!!

@cmsreptiles I believe prickly pear cacti are fully edible? And there are varieties without prickles, so just flat edible pads I believe. I could be wrong, but that might be a good option

Well I have never heard it put quite that way before but thanks!
