Hi all,
I have a clutch from a pied het DG x pied het DG and I’m struggling to identify if I hit any visuals. I know that sounds daft, but looking at listings on MM I’m seeing some listed as visual that look exactly like some listed as het, what exactly should I be looking for? I should add that I’m in the UK and there are no DG shed tests here, so I’d need to send them to RGI which is expensive with the export licence. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Here is a photo of the clutch freshly shed, if it helps. Thanks, Mike
Hey there! With DG pieds, especially at hatching, you’re going to be looking for insanely bright and clean colors and patterns. These guys are all gorgeous but they look like normal pieds to me, I’m not seeing any DG pieds.
Aw, thanks so much! I really appreciate the help
I agree with @inspirationexotics
The DG would be much brighter compared to the siblings.
With both parents being het for DG, I think you may have hit some bad odds. Especially with only 5 hatchlings.
The odds from a het to het breeding are:
1:4 will not have DG
2:4 will be het for DG
1:4 will be visual DG*
The normal looking offspring would all be considered 66% het because unless tested there really isn’t a perfect way to visually ID them. So it’s a 2:3 chance if you want to gamble. The odds gods may have just been mean and decided to not hit the 1:4 visual.
- DG is also a bit of an odd one … There’s technically 3 parts to it: DGa DGb and DGc. I could be wrong because it’s been a bit since I last looked into it … But iirc… you would need a copy of DGc for the animal to be visual. If they don’t even with A and B you may not end up with a visual.
Not sure if it’s just as expensive or if you were aware, but RGI & cltch.io have a UK partner in SWR Shipping for shed testing if you need it in the future: Shed Testing - SWR Shipping
I believe we’re to the point now where DGa and DGb are no longer important or even tested for. Two copies of DGc is what makes the visual - for some reason a and b have also stuck around but are not responsible for the visual phenotype.
thanks so much for the help. I knew the odds but this was my first clutch so I think I was doing a bit of wishful thinking and trying to convince myself I might have hit
I was not aware of that! I’ll definitely look into it in the future. thanks so much
