Do you know anything that can help me with shipping in the heat? I live in Texas and the heat index reaches over 100 everyday. What can I do to ship my reptiles safely?
I have cold packs but that’s it.
I also have never shipped a live animal.
General guidelines say not to ship in 100°+ temps. You should wait until it’s below that!
I’ve seen several sellers (Say that five times fast) note that they will only ship during certain months, due to it being too cold, or too hot. I think in those cases breeders “hold” animals, sometimes for months, until the Spring or Fall and milder weather.
Breeders confirm? Is this something you do?
As mentioned above holding to ship during the nicer weather in spring and fall is the best way to go. If you’re absolutely set on shipping in this heat you’re going to have mixed results. Sometimes can have a great safe shipment. Another time you end up with a dead animal. Shipping via cargo isn’t even reliable as crates have been left on the tarmac resulting in cooked animals.
I hold for proper weather.
Thank you!
Personally, it’s not the temps that worry me its delays on the part of Fedex. The animals are traveling overnight (hopefully being dropped off to fedex as late as possible) so they aren’t being shipped in the midday heat. But if they get delayed on the tarmac or stuck on a hot truck without a cryopak or some other temp regulator that’s where the real problems start.
It also depends on the species imo. Bredl’s pythons that can handle just about anything you throw at them I don’t worry about as much with shipping and they would still get a cryopak this time of year just to err on the side of caution. It is much less stressful when you wait until the spring/fall before temps get crazy but you don’t feel comfortable shipping at a certain time of year then don’t feel obligated to do it, if the buyer has a problem with it then they probably don’t have the animals health at the top of their priority list.
One thing to keep in mind if it’s over a certain temp they won’t insure your shipment(if you use ship your reptiles or such). So it if doesn’t make it all falls on you the shipper.
