Enclosures for a GPT in an Arid environment

Greetings all! I am doing research in preparation for getting a GPT and was hoping I could get some advice here. As a first step I plan to get and set up an enclosure in order to monitor it to ensure I am maintaining the correct environment (humidity, temp, etc) to make a GTP happy. I live in a very dry, arid environment (Nevada) and have heard that some enclosures are better/worse than others at maintaining an ideal tropical environment inside the enclosure. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the best brand enclosure for this? I’m open to any other thoughts/advice/recommendations to keeping a good enclosure in my semi-unique location. Thanks all!

For an enclosure, you will want to avoid glass enclosures and stick with PVC ones. I would also recommend not getting one with a screen top as they will allow for a lot of humidity to escape. Other than that just have a deep substrate that holds humidity well and you should be fine

For a GPT I’d recommend finding a good case that can hold a decent sized fan array and power source. CPU/GPU/RAM can be variable depending on what you plan to do. ;D

For GTP, I would agree with Logar. PVC with venting instead of a screen top will be the best bet to keep in humidity and get a good temp going. Obviously would recommend some height to it either a square or tall form factor vs longer rectangle.

Also, welcome to the forum! I apologize in advance for my joke.

Oh congrats on your plans! What a cool snake. I live in the dry southwest too, and I’ve found that fogger?mister systems you can rely on are a MUST, as well as either good bioactive soil with critters and leaf litter, or some mix of sphagnum and stuff that is resistant to molding for your enclosure floor. I also use two “smart” humidity sensors to keep track and tell my phone what levels are like inside an enclosure. This is for two snakes who get around 45-60% humidity so you may have to do more for a GPT- I am not knowledgable there.

The Eco-Flex 4x2x2 cages on Amazon are a good size for GTPs. They are solid, inexpensive and may have free shipping.

Here is an old polycarbonate cage I made in 2003 for a client. It was for his GTP.

The bottom tub can be used for substrate with a water bowl or just use the whole tub for water.

I custom made the cage to fit this plastic tub. So you could use any size tub you want. You would just have to make the cage fit whatever tub you want.

I put two stops in the back of the cage just above the tub. This helps keep the tub from being moved or flipped over in side the cage. I also added a small rubber wedge in front of the tub so it can’t slide out.

The tree branch is screwed in with stainless steel screws so they won’t rust.

It’s made out of 3/8" and 1" polycarbonate. The sliding doors are 1/4".

The cage is chemically welded together.
Polymethyl methacrylate is what I used for this.

When cutting polycarbonate, you want to use an 80 - to 90 - tooth carbide saw blade. Then, you have to file, sand, and polish all edges that are not chemically welded.

This picture I was testing the humidity and temps before he picked the cage up.
