Hi everyone. I just got my dream snake. A baby western hognose. I havent named her yet. It always takes a while for me to name my babies. I have a question about feeding. The breader said she is 9 weeks old and eating f/t pinkies. I am always terrified at first few feedings that i will do something wrong. I took a good pic of her head. Do think pinkies will be ok. Ive seen some people say to cut them up if they are too big. Any advice is greatly appreciated. These were taken before we got home. I dont want to disturb her yet for better pics. The bottle cap of water is a small gatorade type bottle for size comparison.
Unless they are born undersized, There’s no reason not to feed a Western hog knows a pinky from birth on. Hognose handle large meals well.
Congrats on your new baby! She should handle a pinky just fine. In fact, as she’s had several successful feedings in her new place, it’s best not to change what she’s used to getting and doing. It’s a good idea for the first feeding, especially, to offer the same food in the same manner she has been fed by her breeder. You have years to switch her to a different feeding pattern if you wish. For now, keeping her routine close to what she’s used to will help her become an established feeder with you.
Yeah she’ll take pinkies just fine.
My Hoggie was that size when I got her and she had zero issues eating pinkies (granted it took me a few months to get her on f/t because she suddenly would only take live after buying her from a breeder that said she solely ate f/t).
Btw keep an eye on that bottlecap water dish. Hoggies seem to be notorious for tipping water dishes over, at least mine is…
