Feeding eggs to Texas rat snake

So one of my chickens started laying recently (with multiple not far behind) and the eggs are small (35-40 g). I have been wanting to mix up Elmo’s diet a bit and was thinking the eggs would be good thing to use. They aren’t washed so would just putting them in the enclosure be enough? Should a poke a small hole in the egg so he can smell the eggy goodness better? Should just not feed them to him? Thanks!

As long as he’s got enough girth to swallow one, you should be good to go to offer them whole. Wild rat snakes are often found in chicken coops stealing eggs (and the occasional young bird). I’d try feeding without poking a hole first, I feel like doing so may affect the structural integrity of the egg and possibly end up a mess.

Ooh you’ll have to share if he likes it! I have seen several videos of people pulling ratsnakes out of their coops, so I don’t think its at all something that would be considered unusual food for him. I hope he likes it!

That is actually what got me thinking about it was people having eggs being eaten in their coops on a chicken form I am active on. Unfortunately most aren’t too fond of having them around, although I try my best to get them to not dispose of them. I have a feeling he will like it as it probably smells like chicken butt. :joy:

Given his love of food and how I have to be a bit careful while watering I am not too worried about him not eating it.

I didn’t even consider the fresh, genuine chicken booty smell :joy: :joy: oh he’ll love it for SURE :joy:

I’m betting your snake loves the eggy treat. Right up nature’s alley there.

He looks interested but very confused. This is actually my first day getting 2 eggs so he gets the smaller one which is 36 grams. If he eats it he isn’t getting food for the next month lol.

He looks so surprised lol. I think I am going to use quail eggs in the future until he gains another 100-200 grams.

Ok, second to last update I think. He got it down and it looks so uncomfortable for him :sob:

It really isn’t much bigger than the thickest part of his body but it isn’t flexible like a mouse and is a much different shape. He seems fine so I am not too worried about anything

This is exactly what I look like when I order a hamburger and it comes out way bigger than I expected :joy: :sob:

I had a sonora gopher that would eat room temp eggs. Whooo booy! when she pooped it would warm up the house. Lol. Be ready for that at 2a.m.
