Hello. Just curious how often some people feed their ball pythons that are around my snake’s age/weight. She is 1 year 2 months old, and weighs 734 grams. I have been feeding her 1 small rat(50-60 grams) every 7 days. I see conflicting information on feeding, and generally trust the opinions of those over here on MM over places like Reddit. Should I feed her every 7 days still? Or should I move her to a 10-14 day schedule now?
You’re likely gonna get a ton of different answers, but personally i would go for every week until they’re around 1 year, then roughly every 14 days until they’re 2, then roughly every 3 weeks until they’re 3, and then about once a month when they’re around 3… Keep an eye on her body-condition, if she is losing weight/isn’t growing well she needs food more often, if she gets chubby, then less often. No need for a precise schedule, and depending on the size of the feeder you might want to go a bit longer or shorter in between.
When my bps are big enough to be able to eat a small rat I start feeding every 2 weeks or so. Simple as that . They all have great weights. I am most definitely sure I will hear about my “simple” program……
Just a keeper not a breeder…….
@autumngeckos is correct that, regardless of where you post this question, you’ll see a plethora of different answers. It always comes down to personal preference really, and if you plan to breed your ball python or if it is just a pet.
Since I’m a breeder I go by the weight of my snake and feed a prey item between 10 - 15% of their body weight. I feed every 5 days for hatchlings under 300 grams, and then switch to every 7 days. For my adult males (800+ grams) I’ll feed every 10 - 14 days, and for adult females (1400+ grams) I’ll feed every 7 - 10 days.
Going off by what you posted, your snake is healthy at 700+ grams at over a year. You can keep feeding the 7 day mark, but it also won’t hurt if you push her to 10 - 14 days.
