Hey everyone! So I have two female crested geckos, one is about 3 1/2, and the other is almost 2. Their tanks are kept next to each other, and recently, our older female, Kuro, has been exhibiting “male mating behaviors” with us, such as grabbing onto our hands or nearby cloth to try and “mate”, but she doesn’t make the chirping that usually comes with it. I was wondering if maybe seeing our other gecko is making her think there is a male around to breed with? Not sure, this is the first year shes done this (only been about a week since it started) and I havent been able to find many answers since these things are usually done by male geckos. Any thoughts?
how sure are you that your gecko is a female? Maybe @ghoulishcresties or @foxreptile will have an idea.
90% sure, but of course never certain, but she has no bulge, no pores, never seen hemipenes or ejaculate on glass, and she mostly exhibits female behaviors. Generally very calm, and once her couple minutes of trying to mate are done, she goes back to sitting calmly while we watch tv, play video games, etc. Never had any aggressive behaviors toward us, but she has tried to bully the younger gecko if she gets too close (if theyre out at the same time).
Of course if she was a male it wouldnt be a problem, the two of them are just pet geckos, not trying to get into breeding, so if shes a boy shes a boy lol. Just wondering if females have ever been known to have these behaviors!
Some females are just very dominant, sounds like she’s one of them
Any pics?
May just be very dominant and want to be left alone. Some are like it, touch wood I’ve never had that with mine. But some will do that to show who’s boss
Also ‘female behaviours’. IMO not a thing. All females and males can be different. I have calm females, I have calm males. I have females who run like heck when you want to say hi and I have males the same.
I’ll grab a pic of the underside of her belly when i get home today, but heres a short video i took while she was trying to mate with my hand
No audio because i was too busy laughing lmao XD
Were you holding the other female before her?
Nope, just typical handling, no interaction with the younger female beforehand. Its not an aggressive bite either, not a hard bite, and no tail wagging/open mouth/angry noises before hand. She just does some sniffing/licking around, does a few minutes of trying to mate, and then goes back to relaxed. All i can think of is maybe shes just frisky, or like others said, a dominant female. I’ll grab that picture of her underside later, but yeah, 90% sure shes not a male.
I wish mine was that tame! Yours is a little cutie!
Awwww thank you so much! She loves cuddling out in the living room while we watch tv <3
Her sister on the other hand (our younger crestie) is quite the little jumper. She has to hop onto everything XD
Haha I love Geckos personalities, they are all different.
It doesn’t look like the male mating ritual, not like my fellas lol, plus definitely female.
Is it possible she’s carrying eggs (not fertile eggs) I have one female here that only gets like that when she is carrying eggs. She’s not doing it to hurt me, but it’s as though it’s her way of saying I’m dominant.
Either that or she could be asking for insects
Not sure about eggs yet, I’ve been feeling her belly every once in awhile, but nothing there yet! As for crickets, she definitely loves her bugs XD
Alrighty, well thanks for the replies everyone. Glad it sounds like she just being dominant or ready for some eggs. I’ll keep an eye on her, and if anything changes I’ll make an update, but for now this can stay closed <3
Funny little creatures, aren’t they?
I don’t know if one of your female is sending out signals about wanting to make babies, but apparently there’s scientific evidence that when certain lizards undergo parthenogenesis, they require courtship behavior with another female to stimulate ovulation. If you’re interested, there’s some info in this article. It covers other creatures too, but you can skin down to the reptiles if you want. Lol
