Do not breed any of the leopard geckos. I have a feeling they are retired breeders from a breeder who didn’t care or didn’t know what they were doing. Or worse may have stick tail disease.
As for the cresties only 1 looks somewhat decent. The rest have issues as everyone has said.
My advice you have pets there. Don’t breed any of these animals. You’ll regret it if you do. A breeder is only as good as his stock and quality of his animals.
MBD (I know that’s not technically the right term, but I can’t remember what the actually correct one is) means that an animal is in such bad shape that they can’t even form and maintain a normal skeleton. Bones can be bowed, broken- often they heal incorrectly, if they heal. Any animal that has dealt with MBD should not have the demands of breeding (think eggshell formation and expulsion) placed upon at any point in their future, in my opinion. Many would disagree, though.
Most of the cresties aren’t up to size yet. The smallest is only 7.9 grams and only 2 are up to full size. All of these were more for the future and to get me started with them.
I’m taking all this info on board and thank you to everyone’s that’s helped.
Yes, don’t breed a crestie with MBD, especially a female. It isn’t heritable, but it would be too much stress on the mother gecko’s body. A crestie with MBD just needs a calm, solitary lifestyle and some extra TLC.
And, to be clear: I don’t know anything about leos, but there is no need to regret taking in those cresties, even though they were neglected before you got them. It seems like they have now come to a good owner who will appreciate them, care for them properly, and give them high-quality, happy lives, which is only a good thing. And you will be able to get a better sense of their genetic health and overall structure as they grow.
As @azoreptiles said, you have pet quality geckos here and it would be unwise to breed them. This is why breeders get their stock from reputable sources. Not just the cheapest ones that you can get. If you want to get into breeding, I would recommend getting these guys healthy, rehoming them as pets, and get breeding stock from good breeders on MM.
I’m going to do my best with them. At the very least they’ll have better homes that they would have otherwise.
I chose to get them all because I had seen people say to get whatever types you like and build up in terms of breeding. Kind of like people do with ball pythons.
With those I started of with a few simple morphs and built up over time. Now I have a great collection.
Obviously I wouldn’t breed any that aren’t good health wise. But I thought morph wise you can start anywhere and build up to more expensive better ones. Or good examples of holdback you keep.
I’m new to geckos, so I’m looking for the best info and ways to do things.
Just want to say that I think it’s really cool how dedicated you are to getting all these guys healthy. It just really warms my crusty old heart. It’s so wonderful to see compassion and empathy when some people in the hobby treat reptiles as ‘things’- commodities to be utilized and then discarded when no longer useful.
I’ve bred leos before, but admittedly I’m not very good at it, so it might be best to get tips on breeding from someone better versed than myself. I’m the weirdo in the corner with a 15 year old hova-bator, heh.
I came across this blog post awhile ago, and it seemed to have some solid tips:
Any updates on the little geckos?
Crestie 1 is a Harlequin partial pin. 2 is a harlequin, 3 is an Olive Harlequin, that’s assuming it fires up dark greenish as has the Olive eyes. 4 is a Harlequin Tricolour and 5 is a Harlequin Partial pin/pin dashed.
How they all getting on now?
She’s about 7-8 months right now. All my babies in the past have lost the majority of their bands by 3-4 months. She has zero spots, but as you can see a lot of pattern on the head and on her legs as well. I’d think super hypo, but my others have no pattern, bands or anything. All my guesses have been disproven somehow.
Make another thread and then the leopard gecko people can help!
I’m a Crestie person so I wouldn’t have a clue!
