Giant African Millipede Babies!

Hi all,

I was not expecting it to ever happen, especially since my male sadly passed away somewhat recently, but my giant African millipede had babies!
Mama pede has been needing a substrate refresh - hers became infested with isopods (seriously, do magic potion isopods reproduce via spores or something?) - so today while she was out we removed her and spent 3 solid hours carefully going through the soil removing babies. Tank was then thoroughly cleaned and filled with fresh substrate and then mama pede went back in.

We spent another hour extracting babies and making sure they had no tagalong isopods.

So now I have multiple deli cups with substrate and about 8 tiny baby millipedes in each one. They’ll need a better setup as they grow, and I’m really hoping I will be able to find homes for them locally.

Are there any care requirements I should be aware of with the babies, or is it the same as for the adults?

Congrats! Those little moss setups are almost as cute as the babies.

Congratulations on the baby pedes! I had a giant millipede but it didn’t survive with me! Those babies look translucent! So cute!

That’s so cool!! I’ve always wanted Giant African Millipedes but could never justify them with how expensive they are. How many babies did you get?

I would so love one….they have been on my bucket list forever, but the price of them sadly is just too much to justify it…they are so cool, i remember the first time I got to hold one at Cornell University….my little bug-crazed boy brain went ballistic lol :joy:

I generally drip maple syrup over the substrate when I have millipede babies (of any kind). Also, for giants I would add leaf compost and oak and mulberry leaves. The are amazingly slow to get! I rarely sold AGB babies until they were a year old. Keep the substrate yummy snd rich and they’ll grow steady! Congrats.
