Something launched last month that I think more of this community should know about, because a registry only works if people know it exists.
Gold Standard Gecko Club opened their online registry and membership portal on June 13. It’s the first of its kind for geckos. Supported species right now are crested geckos, leopard geckos, and gargoyle geckos, with members able to register animals and document lineage at members.goldstandardgeckoclub.com.
Some background for anyone who hasn’t followed GSGC. The club was founded by David of Tikis Geckos and held its first judged conformation event in 2024 at the Flora Fauna Conference. They’ve been crowning champions at NRBE since, and they’re hosting conformation for cresteds and gargoyles at NRBE again this August 15. As far as I know it’s the only judged gecko conformation program in the country.
What makes this more than a show circuit is the standards behind it. Entry rules require accurate and complete documentation of a gecko’s genetics, lineage, and breeding history, and first-generation line-bred offspring are barred from competition. That’s not paperwork for its own sake. That’s a club deciding that provenance matters before money does.
I grew up in the dog world. My family bred and showed APBTs and later American Bullies, and I was around when ABKC was being established and later helped found the American Bully breed club within UKC. The reason century-old dog breeds still exist in recognizable form is boring infrastructure: stud books, registries, written standards, and clubs like AKC, UKC, and FCI that kept records long after any individual breeder was gone. Geckos have animals selling for thousands on lineage claims that live in DMs and dead spreadsheets. When a breeder retires or a hard drive fails, that history is gone. GSGC is the first serious attempt I’ve seen to build the dog-world version of that infrastructure for geckos.
