First time breeder here. I love Banana and G Stripe. Was looking at a trio of snakes, a male and two females. A Male Banana Clown Het G Stripe, a female Lesser DH G Stripe Clown and a female Pastel DH G Stripe Clown. Would this be a decent start? What are your guys opinions?
It’s not too terrible of a group… Pretty simple group of genes to start with that should be pretty easy to ID overall…
But I would personally try to get one female with visual G-stripe to avoid having every non-visual hatchling being a gamble.
The only guarantee you have with this group is every hatchling will be het clown because of the male. The non-GS hatchlings will be considered 66% hets since theoretically 2 out of 3 would be carrying GS. The lesser and pastel is a basic coin flip of yes or no.
I do have to agree with armiyana! It would double your chances of getting the visual double reccessive (Clown and G-stripe) If you get a male that is double visual already, but The price for these boys is around $2000 and more. So I think you being a first time breeder you can stick with a single visual gene recessive + het G-stripe. It’s gonna cost you way less and eventhough you might acquire quite a few 66% het G-stripe ball pythons. The victory of you finally making that visual double recessive yourself will possibly mean more to you!
(Royal constrictor designs) is doing a sale right now where all of his ball pythons are half off. I seen a male Fire,Banana,Clown het G-stripe going for $375 now he is a baby and if your looking for a bigger male that is likely ready to breed (Oregan exotic balls) has a male Banana,Clown het G-stripe 700g+ for $500. (Royals) sales end in a couple days and I think (Oregan exotics) ends in 18 hrs, but don’t rush into a decision your not comfortable with, these sales happen quite often and somtimes you might get super lucky on an Auction! If you decide to wait. So take your time and shop and compare prices. You got this! And best of luck to you and your Ball python Adventures!!
Have Fun, James. Ohh and welcome to the community!!! Everyone here ROCKS🤟 now you do too!
Thanks for the reply man! That’s exactly where my head was at, so it’s nice to hear someone confirm what my thought process was! I really appreciate it!
Just to be clear.
I’m not saying your male needs to be a gStripe clown.
Just that one female should ideally be gStripe het clown.
Then you know that one female will toss guaranteed hets. That cuts down on the number of hatchlings you might want to have shed tested to know what to hold back.
Heck I took a gamble on a gorgeous female 66% het and she isn’t het for the hypo I needed.
The 50% I hatched personally was also not a het… But thankfully her older half sister is a visual and her brother is a het.
It’s also a bit easier to find homes for animals you can guarantee hets on. Especially if it’s just a normal looking snake which you can end up with quite a few. But that’s further down the line and such. Just do make sure you have a local exotic specialist vet so if your breeders do have an emergency like a prolapse or eggbinding you can get it cared for quickly.
You are Right! You did say female. That was my bad, I should have caught that. #NoobMoves
