Heyy I’m lookin to get an arboreal snake (specifically python or boa since i like their faces lol) since i have the perfect spot for an arboreal enclosure, tho i prefer animals i can take out for a bit and chill with
I have space for an enclosure around 36x24x(any height) and any python/boa i find is either not handleable or would do better in a 4x2x2
I know some green tree pythons can be somewhat handleable, but i want to see my options, also heard about indonesian tree boas and they sound pretty cool but im struggling to get any information about them,
TY for any help or advice :]
Boas (BI/BC) are semi-arboreal and are great to handle. But that may not meet your criteria of wanting something that will work in a more vertical enclosure.
Carpet pythons can be quite handleable with the right socialization. And I’ve heard that Amazon tree boas, when CBB and properly socialized, can be surprisingly nice to handle, despite their spicy reputation.
I would check out the Red Mountain Boas. They are absolutely gorgeous and something different besides the normal tree boas ……
Keeper of an Amazon Tree Boa here.
If you don’t mind taking bites regularly when they are smaller to socialize them and get them used to handling they do tend to mellow out when they get older, this isn’t every snake though. They are a lot lighter bodied that other Boas, even arboreal species so their handling should be a bit more delicate.
Edit: I mixed up Green Tree Pythons with Emerald Tree Boas … still they both have pretty nasty bites, ETBs being the worse of the two.
I would not reccomend GTPs if you are a beginner, their bites are extremely painful and can cause nerve damage due to the sheer size of their teeth as adults, I’ve had a pretty nasty bite from a friend’s juvenile GTP so I know how bad it can get. I believe their teeth size ratio is the largest amongst non-venomous snakes…
I believe Carpet Pythons could be a reasonable choice though I’ve never had any experience with them so don’t take my word for it.
Some other speices I can recall are Children’s Pythons and Spotted Pythons but I’m just listing what comes up off the top of my mind which I think are arboreal/semi-arboreal…
Someone with more knowledge mighr be able to help you here
Good luck!
Pretty sure that’s emerald tree boas. But GTPs still have pretty gnarly teeth.
An antaresia such as the Children’s or Spotted python sounds ideal for what you have, and you can make such a very cool lot of branches in an enclosure that big for it to explore all over! (Frankly they tempt me too, but I am at a current limit of two snakes)
Ah you’re right… Ty for catching that I get them mixed up all the time! They’re so similar lol. Still I agree that GTPs have really nasty bites, the one I got definitely competes with some other bites I’ve gotten from larger species.
ETBs used to be my absolute dream snake…until I saw a picture of their teeth. Then I thought GTPs might be a perfect substitute…until I learned that their teeth situation is only slightly less insane.
Honestly it’s just as well, I doubt I’d be able to meet their high humidity requirements. I still think they’re some of the most gorgeous snakes on the planet, but definitely not the right pet for me.
