I’m building a tub rack and im having problems figuring out whether or not I need a gap between the tub and heat tape. Every where I look I see people saying both is correct.

You want a small gap… if the tub constantly rubs on it you risk shorting it and starting a fire or destroying it enough for it to not work properly.

Yup small gap to let heat dissipate and not build up in one spot.
