Been setting up 2 terrariums for baby leopard geckos and need help on what heating and lighting to get. I’ve got 2 bioactive 24x18x12s Im setting up for 2 baby’s. I just can’t seem to figure out what lighting, heating, thermostat, etc, would be best. I’ve always used arcadia with my cresties so I will probably stick with that if it’s a good enough option. Just wondering if anyone has similar things or knows what I should go with.
Leopard geckos are nocturnal. I would only provide UV for a very short period in the morning or the evening. Many of the morphs available are also some form of albinism or hypo melanism which affects the pigments in the eyes. UV should always be used with caution in those cases to avoid prematurely blinding the animal or causing cataracts.
Personally I don’t think UV/UVB should be used on leopard geckos. Period. Give that they are nocturnal. I have never used UV/UVB on any of my leopard geckos.
Buy a basking lamp and two ceramic heat emitters for at night, keep the emitters on 24/7 to keep their temps up between 75F(night time) and 90F(day time). Petsmart has thermometers that also measure humidity levels. Try to use a coconut fiber roll out mat as substrate, amazon has them for pretty cheap and they are reusable and easy to make fit to enclosure. I have a wet towel under the mat to keep humidity up, and a corner of moss for them to burrow in. They love to dig. Any loose substrate like sand and dirt puts them at a higher risk of impaction and UV can be damaging if they have a lighter skin tone but UVB lamps with low wattage is good in small amounts. Try to have a flat bowl that’s fairly shallow so live prey can’t escape, and gutload them. sorry for the word vomit but goodluck!
