Hello! New girl on the block here

I’ve only used this site a bit in the past to look up pictures of various morphs I’m interested in. Decided to join now because this year I am finally able to seriously start work on my breeding project I’ve been planning and preparing for quite some time. (Essentially I want to create a strawberry x lavender corn snake.) Also, I live in Japan and while I have many friends in the reptile community here, I figured it would be helpful to join an English speaking community as it’s my native language.

As for a bit about me, I’ve only recently gotten interested in reptiles - probably within the past 4yrs or so. I’m very into birds, specifically birds of prey, and even more specifically owls. I have three owls of my own: barn owl, indian scops owl, great horned owl. In Japan there is a ton of cross over between the owl/falconry community and the reptile community, so in hindsight me getting into snakes is not surprising at all.

Here’s a list of my current menagerie

Owls
1 male barn owl named Merlin
1 male indian scops owl named Mugi-cha
1 female great horned owl named Missy

Corn Snakes
1 female salmon snow, motley, pos het vanishing named Inca Rose
1 male hypo bloodred, het lavender named Cinnabar
1 male lavender named Lepidolite
1 female hypo lavender named Morganite

Hognose Snakes
1 male normal named Buhi
1 female axanthic conda named Nimue
1 male axanthic, pos het toxic named Oberon
1 male sable, pos het mai tai named Sherlock

Also have a male/female pair of red-eyed crocodile skinks.

Here’s pics of some of my babies (some might not be super recent)

(can you find the second skink in this picture? )

Welcome!
If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of process do you have to go through to be able to own an owl? Here in America it’s pretty complicated lol, but I’ve always loved the idea of falconry:)

Yes, welcome to the MMC!

I didn’t know keeping owls in captivity was a thing.

That is so cool you can keep owls! All your animals are really nice looking as well. If you don’t mind me asking, how long have you been in Japan for and what led to you moving there? I would love to visit someday.

As for this, on the very left underneath the plant you can see the head of the skink

I will say it’s probably a little too easy to get an owl here. There’s no requirements other than having the money to buy one. That said, owls are just pets here as they are exceedingly unsuited for actual falconry.
I don’t know for sure, but I think for people actually hunting with their birds there is more regulation. I do know there is a specific hunting season period because I went to a bbq event at a breeder’s facility that was held on the first day of the hunting season.

I’ve been here for about 9 years now. I minored in Japanese in college and had the opportunity to study abroad in Tokyo for a semester. The experience was so wonderful I decided to move here after I graduated and saved up enough money.

I super recommend anyone to visit if they get the chance! It’s a beautiful country and the people (as a whole) are so friendly. (although I wouldn’t recommend anyone to move here unless they speak the language or are committed to learning it)

You found the skink! Their curiosity really conflicts with their shyness sometimes lol

I’d LOVE to visit Japan someday. I’m a big fan of Pokemon, so I’m pretty sure I have to go see all of the Pokemon themed stuff over there at least once. It also just looks like an awesome place lol.

I spent two weeks in Japan back a few years ago. Would definitely go again. My sister in law was studying abroad there for a year and we met up with her. We went to Tokyo, kyoto, Osaka, a couple of the other main big places. Was definitely worth the trip

Welcome! Uhmmm… Yokosou? My Japanese is super weak. Hahah.

Love the owls! They’re so neat.
And that’s already a pretty cool collection you have! It’s really refreshing to see someone who already has an established collection AND a plan for what they want to breed. So many try to jump in without the experience.

Looking forward to seeing more posts! =D
