Either could work, depending on a few variables. RHPs are going to do a better job at increasing the overall ambient temperatures in the enclosure, especially if the room where you’re keeping your boa is on the cooler side. DHPs have a smaller, more focused beam of heat.
For a large enclosure in a cool room, I’d go with the RHP. For a smaller enclosure, and/or an enclosure in a warmer room, DHP would work well.
For what it’s worth, I’m planning to use a RHP for my boa once she’s big enough for her adult enclosure. She’ll have either a 6’ or 8’ PVC enclosure in a room that I keep on the cooler side, so a RHP seems like the better choice in that scenario. I do use a DHP for my blood python (in a 4’ enclosure in the same cool room), and I pair that with an under tank heater to help increase the ambient temperature on the warm end a bit more over a wider area.
Hello, @mpissos, and welcome to the community! I don’t work with boas so I can’t address your question but I wanted to say hi. You’ll get solid info here from a caring community. I will tag @lumpy and @tommccarthy and @caron who have boas, among many other boaphiles. It’s terrific you’re doing your research and getting things right before you get your animal. Best of luck!
Hello! I highly recommend a pvc enclosure such as the ones sold on The Boaphile website. I ordered mine with a UT heat panel as the only source of heat. But I talked to Jeff at The Boaphile before I decided on that type of heat source.
The location of the enclosure makes a big difference. Will it be on an inside wall of the house or an outside wall? What is the temperature inside the house? Does it fluctuate or stay constant? These are things to consider before you order/build your enclosure.
My Boaphile enclosures stayed at a constant 85 degrees with the thermostat, which is the perfect temperature for most boas. So perfect that it was conducive to 2 of my boas to breed, unintended of course!
So the environment around the enclosure makes a determining factor when choosing a heat source/sources.
So it really depends on a couple things. If you keep your room at a cooler temperature (under 75) or plan on having an enclosure that is 6+ feet, then a RHP is going to be a better option. But if you a warmer room with a smaller enclosure than a DHP would work great as well. I personally would go with the heat panel just because it is a bit more versatile but both are good options for different situations.
I am just saying…I personally prefer to use heat tape for my bias in their 4x2x1s that are pvc. It is up to personal preference but I like the bottom heat for them.
