A lot of them do, usually for warmth or hiding places.

Some geckos just prefer that, especially ones that didn’t have substrate before. But there can also be other reasons like security and humidity. Do you have lots of cover and climbing areas? Can you add a picture of the enclosure? I would try to increase the humidity, the substrate looks dry, adding water to the substrate might help. Also, is there heat on the bottom? The gecko could be trying to get closer to the heat.

It is likely due to low humidity, looking at the picture the substrate looks dry. What is the humidity like?
