Help sexing this hognose please?

I’m thinking female but I’m not sure. Please see the attached. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome!
So its kinda hard to tell. Males will typically have much longer tails than females so if you have a clutchmate or another Hoggie around the same age and size to compare to you -might- be able to determine the sex. Buuuut the most accurate way to find out is by probing if you really want/need to know.

-Also side note is it just me or does everyone I see handling Hognose snakes wear gloves?? Why?
Not a slight against the poster in any way I’m just genuinely curious lol.

Hello and welcome to the MorphMarket community! This one is pretty easy since the animal is a lighter morph (Leucistic?). Do you see in your first two photos how there is a purple area below the cloaca? Those are the hemipenes, you’ve got a male. Another good indicator is that the tail doesn’t immediately taper, it says longer.

Here’s a good visual comparison. Female on the left, male on the right:

An imperfect but occasionally helpful method is counting the scale pairs after the cloaca. 37 or less is considered a female, 39+ a male.

Just a heads up, this isn’t correct. The most accurate method at current would be having the animal DNA sexed through shed testing. MorphMarket has them available on the main site, testing is done by RGI. It costs, I believe $20+tax for a colubrid.

Ohhh I didn’t know they did shed testing for Hoggies :open_mouth:
Thank you!

You’re welcome! The colubrid sex determination test covers a lot of colubrid species, which is a great tool to have, especially for those who aren’t confident in probing/popping.
