Help with Mouth Rot

Well I’m sure you’d be excited about being a repeat customer right

Doesn’t even know how to write pre-existing.

In all my years of working with reptiles, primarily snakes, I or anyone I know have never seen a snake develop mouth rot or RI from being shipped. Of course they can get injured, but those ailments usually take time to develop.
In my opinion that’s a crp excuse, I don’t even know how I’d respond to such a crp excuse.

I’m with you , I don’t know how to respond. If this is the way he’s going to go about it I don’t know what my next step is.

Tell me about it, I only bought from him because he has what I wanted, what’s the likelyhood I’d buy from him again especially now?

I just dont believe for a second that the snake bit the bag on the way to you and that is the reason for R.I… I have probably owned 50 plus animals including balls, various colubrids, and lizards yet I have never had a issue with them getting R.I. while being shipped to me. They either had it before you got it or while it was in your care, plain and simple. Its obviously not worth arguing with this guy but it would be worth noting to him that R.I. doesn’t just happen over night.

I agree 1000%. I’ve owned many different species of snakes. And have probably had over 150+ retics in bags. I’ve NEVER experienced a snake bit a bag. I know it happens but during shipping!? Not likely.

I don’t know where you go from here either Switch. I’d maybe try to explain the simple fact he is wrong and push a little more. Not in a mean way but stern. Maybe he will come around just to have you go away lol. But all in all I’d probably treat my snake if it as me and note to myself and others I know to not support that breeder.

I don’t like to be “that guy” but I will be pushy if I have to when it comes to someone messing up a order or if the animal just wasn’t up to health standards or didnt look as advertised. Nearly filed a lawsuit on a fairly big boa and ball python breeder on here over a 350 snake. People really think they can get away with just taking a couple hundred bucks but when it comes to my hard earned money I dont play nice. But yeah I totally agree, being stern yet kind goes a long way because then the seller wont instantly shut you down when asking for a refund/replacement or compensation of any kind.

I hear you there man, and I’m the same way.

None of us like being “that guy”, but I think as long as you’re polite and upfront with your concerns, and voice them repeatedly in instances like this, some of the time that shady breeder will come around and make the situation right. Unfortunately I don’t think that will happen often from my few experiences with situations like this, but people need to know(especially breeders)that instances like this hurt our hobby as a whole.

Tbh I was thinking he wouldn’t give me any trouble, I was just asking him to cover taking her to the vet which is less than 1/4 for what I paid for the pair. I finally did respond to him, with the help of my SO. Pretty much politely told him that he wasn’t right about the RI and what the difference was between giving me 150 now vs 150 credit.

It’s hard since you aren’t allowed to give breeder reviews on here, you just have to read reviews and hope for the best, or word of mouth from trusted peoples. I am shopping for a ball python (first one of my own, just ‘pet sat’ for one in the past) and the most difficult thing was chosing a breeder to work with to purchase from. I hope your snake gets well soon!!!

Thank you! The thing is is that this Breeder did have good reviews, though on the other site it’s hard to give reviews and you aren’t prompted to like here. I even went to the FBI groups to see if anyone had anything on him. Didn’t see anything.

Here is how she is looking today.

She looks much better than when you originally informed us about her illness.
That’s a great sign. Hopefully she will continue to show improvement in the next few weeks.
Keep up what you’re doing and I’m positive she’ll be on the up an up soon, and again I’m sorry the breeder didn’t cover any of the expenses, but I’m really happy she ended up with someone like you who will give her the proper care.

Definitely miles better than the other pictures you shared with us. Very happy to see her progress and she will only get better from here. Although it is a sucky situation at least you have a beautiful pair of snakes that will give you more good memories and experiences than 150 credit ever can. Post some follow ups when she is back to full health!

Damn! I’m really sorry Switch. :green_heart::green_heart:
She looked like she was improving a lot aswel.

If you have any plans for a autopsy, make sure to use the refrigerator rather than the freezer.

Sorry about her, she was looking like she was going to be fine.

However it might be a good idea to take pictures to show the breeder as proof that she died and maybe close ups of the mouth rot.

:pensive: I’m sorry Switch.
I hope the breeder owns up to this. And know you did the most you could. You took her to the vet, started treatment, and gave her the best chance she would have had.
I really hope you’re doing ok, you need someone to vent to or talk with, shoot me a PM.

Thank you all for the support. I thought she was going to be fine as well, she was looking so much better. I messaged the breeder this morning and he told me he would replace her. Though she can’t be replaced in my heart. This has hit me very hard to the point I don’t even think I going to try and even breed this year.
