Help with sexing our beardie

Our beardie is 8 months old. Originally we thought male but now we don’t have a clue :see_no_evil:
Any help with suggestions would be amazing! Thankyou

That is 100% a male. A female wouldn’t have pores like that. They do look a bit clogged which is most of the time caused by lack of rough surfaces in the enclosure. I would just add a brick (not the ones with the holes) or a large rock just to increase the amount of roughness he had in his enclosure. You can also give him a 15 minute bath in 85 degree water and that should help a bit to get them loosened up. Clogged pores aren’t dangerous or anything but they can definitely be irritating to them!

Could we get a top view as well? No reason for it, I just bet he is a good looking guy!

And welcome to the community! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

He does have a large rock in there but he is obsessed with his bridge :joy: I’ll try bathing him after work tomorrow

He’s an absolutely gorgeous beardie. He’s a zero

He is so pretty! Do you think you could rough up his bridge with some low grit sand paper? That could help if he spends a lot of time walking on it.

He really is. I’ll get the hubs to give it a go and see what we can do. He spends most of his days chilling on the bridge watching what’s going on in the living room. We also have some wood in his Viv aswell. He just prefers the bridge for some reason.

Thankyou for your help

Hmmmmm I would have guessed female…… I have a male and his pores are very prominent…. But of course I am wrong about a lot of things here so I’m sure a correction from someone will come soon!

Here is a picture comparing male vs female. While it does have relatively small pores compared to some males you will see, it is also only 8 months old.

You can also see hemipenes in the picture which are once again somewhat small than what you sometimes see in pictures online but he is still pretty young.

I didn’t go to bed until 2:30 yesterday so I am tired but relooking at it, it does look like it has the potential to be female. I am still leaning male because of the reasons above but now I am questioning myself. At this point I am just going to relook at it in the morning cause I am out of it.

@e_h2014 i don’t know why I thought I saw clogged pores. They actually look perfect. Sorry about that :man_facepalming:. But would you be able to lift the tail up at 90 degrees rather than what looks to be 45 degrees? That can help to see if the bulges I am seeing actually exist or is my delusional brain play tricks on me.

@armiyana I know you don’t work with beardies or anything but I just think another option would be a good

This is going to sound really weird…but holding the tail up like that, try shining a phone’s light through the side your fingers are on. If the trick works, on a male you’ll actually see the shapes of the hemipenes.

I really only worked with baby beardies so I never got very good with sexing… but would agree on this looking like a male who hasn’t fully matured yet. If Logar and I are right, those pores will start making a little more wax soon and the bumps under the tail should be more noticeable soon. But being a zero, the pores may just seem a bit more pronounced to us then they would on a regularly colored beardie?

Thankyou  the two bulges are alot more pronounced in person now I’m lifting his tail up more.

I’ll shine a light on him when I get home to double check. He’s just thrown me completely. He’s not our first beardie but I couldn’t be confident in what I thought he was.

I still say female until proven otherwise. @e_h2014

Here’s a photo example of the flashlight sexing method @armiyana mentioned (image links to the FB post I got it from):

That’s a really interesting topic. In fact, I suspect that the male we’ve had for many years is actually a female, because his beard never darkens. We were told that it was a male, and we never felt the need to verify it. I plan to check this soon!
