Hi, I’m moving from Spain to Ireland in a few months and I’m obviously taking my corn snake with me.
He’s around 4 years old, 150cm right now and weighs about 500gr.
This is my first time moving with him and I have no idea how to ship him. I’ve found tons of info on what I legally need to get him over there but almost nothing on the actual shipping.
Could anyone help with what materials I’d need to buy and if there’s any information you think I might need.
Thank you so much!!
You may want to try contacting Dutch Dragon Imports as they do import/export in the EU, though I don’t know if they do intra-EU shipping. I’m not sure if you’re legally allowed to ship them yourself, you may have to use a courier. You could check if there are any animal courier services near you that handle reptiles.
I would err on the side of caution. Assume the box will get put on it’s side and moved hard. Not sure if a layer of noodles or bubble wrap is allowed, but I would be extra, extra sure. Keeping ventilation in mind, I would still probably do a box, noodles, another box, bubble wrap, then the big main box. It should not move around much, but have all that cushion. NO air holes should be obstructed. I would line the inside box with something soft (not edible) on every side and even that would have padding under it. I might even get and include a very dull light with a timer that mimics her regular light cycle. Check about batteries. bottom line- it can be done but much care must be taken. Assume shippers will be rough.
Please do not give shipping advice if you’re not familiar with the regulations involved. If the animal is to travel by air, it must be packaged according to IATA Live Animals Regulations. Shipping via ground in the EU may require a specialized courier and packing requirements. On top of this, adding a light to a shipment is a big no. Not only are there risks and possible regulations involved with including battery powered lighting, it will very likely cause the snake more stress than if it were shipped in darkness.
To the OP, you may consider contacting livetrade@agriculture.gov.ie for more information.
I hear you. Just wanted to share a few thoughts but you are right. It’s important to be aware of all the laws and whatnot. I did preface with “…not sure…” I do know that shippers can be very rough. I hope her snake is ok. I would be extra careful. Hopefully her shipper is really good. You shared some helpful links. It’s nice to meet you.
Fully agree with Jess on this!
