Facts

Species: Crested Gecko
Name of Gene: Highway
First produced by whom: Originates from The Gourmet Rodent, first publicly proven by Omni Geckos
Year First Produced: pre 2017
Genetics Type (Incdom/Codom/Recessive/Polygenic/etc): Incdom
In complex with other genes?: Yes, Cappuccino & Sable
Other names/aliases for it?:
Description: Looks similar to cappuccino and sable, characterized by pinning that ‘bleeds’ inward on the dorsum. Similar to sables, they hatch with an orangey wash over their white pattern that fades with age.

Appearance; What it does/looks like?

  • Head: Often has deep orange blushing, reduced crests
  • Body: Pinning that bleeds inward over time
  • Belly: Nothing really of note here
  • Tail: White at the base, often with a lack of the ‘Y’ commonly attributed to caps, and overall fading down to dark toward the tip

Proven Lines: Omni, Epimorphs, Eureka
Related Genes: Cappuccino, Sable

Proven: To what degree it is proven out to not just be polygenic? Reproducible among various phenotypic presentations, with a unique super form differentiating it from sable or cap.
Unique: Why do you believe this is a new morph and not an existing one? Highways produce a unique super form, and when bred to sable or cappuccino, produce additional unique super forms that are different from super cap or super sable. To me they look visually most similar to sables, but their super form looks more like a super cap, except with normal eyes. This complex works exactly like the yellowbelly complex in ball pythons, where het forms can be mixed and matched to make supers that are sort of on a spectrum of color and pattern.

Problems: Any problems? Super form has reduced nostrils and declining health after reaching maturity similar to super cappuccino
History: The history behind its discovery? In 2017 both Omni Geckos and Epimorphs purchased unique looking animals from The Gourmet Rodent at a reptile expo and Omni Geckos ultimately proved theirs to be genetic around the same time cappuccinos were discovered, leading many to believe they were cappuccinos. Upon further test breeding and creation of various supers, it has been proven to be a third distinct allelic trait in the complex. Omni named the gene Highway after the male they originally purchased.
Disagreement or Controversy: I’m sure there are still people who will say it is ‘just cappuccino’ because they haven’t seen the spectrum of super forms or know the significance of them. Unfortunately, with the super forms being non-viable, it makes test breeding on a wide scale difficult ethically.
