Hello! I’ve been keeping reptiles for about 15 years, and it’s always been a dream of mine to breed hognoses. I’ve been researching and learning about how to breed them for a couple years now and have started to gather everything I’ll need. I have three females with different genetics and will be getting a very nice male soon. They are all still way too small to breed yet, so I want to spend this time to learn more about the genetics I’ll be working with.
I’m new to this, and I realize it would probably be easier to stick to a couple simple genetics, but I ended up with some really nice snakes with multiple genes.
So, heres what I have at the moment:
Female Normal (easy peasy lol)
Female Toffee Belly Conda 50% Sable
Female Conda Het Lavender
The male I’m getting soon is a Superarctic Conda Het Sable/Albino.
I will be talking more with the breeder I’m getting the male from and asking for his advice too, but I don’t want to bombard him with questions lol
So, with the genetics I have/will have, what do you guys suppose I should do first? I really wanted to make lavender babies, but the het lav male I was given unfortunately has a small kink that wasn’t noticed at first. For obvious reasons, I won’t be breeding him.
I’m still doing my own research of course, but its always good to learn from those with more experience, so here I am! Lol TIA!

Regardless, that is a fairly strong male to have. The females are not terrible, but it would have been best to have one het or visual albino or a guaranteed het sable female. At least every offspring from him will be guaranteed to be an artic. Getting a visual recessive female would be great to combo him with. Especially if one of those visuals is sable or albino to make a guaranteed het.
The results would probably be best with the 2nd female.
If you are really lucky she will prove out as het sable. Then your best possible result is an Artic Superconda Sable het Toffee belly 50% het albino. If she isn’t het sable… Then the offspring are all 50% het sable instead of sable and 66% hets.
3rd female is a bit weak since you can still get all artics and maybe some condos/Supercondas… But then you have the 50% het albino/sable/lav. It’s a gamble I wouldn’t want to play with.
The normal female is honestly the weakest link here at the moment because she doesn’t have any hets that would be useful. You’ll get all artics, sure. Maybe you can end up with a couple artic condas… But then you have the 50% sable/albino to gamble on.

Thanks for this reply! I was originally wanting to make lavender babies, which is why I bought the het lav. I also bought a male arctic het lav, but he ended up having a small kink that the breeder didn’t notice. (The breeder has been informed and has been extremely helpful and was very quick to correct this mistake. The super arctic is actually a gift from him to make up for the kinked male)
Since I can’t breed the arctic het lav male due to having a kink, I have to work with the genetics I have until I can get a male with the lavender gene.
Thanks again for the reply, it’s very helpful!

I have been in that position a few times. If you breed what you have you will end up with normals with a bunch of low possibility Hets.
That is difficult to sell babies.
The solution is to buy a
Toffee male with het Sable to prove out the first female
Visual sable or albino female with a possible het for the other trait.
Breed the normal to anything and enjoy what you get

This is wholly incorrect. Based on the male they listed that they’re acquiring, a wild type is actually impossible paired with any of the OPs females. Even to the normal female, bare minimum all offspring will be visual Arctic, with about half being Conda as well.

You are right, I should not ignore the incomplete dominant traits. That being said the OP probably spent a premium to get a female and a male with the potential to create a dual recessive combo. It would be unfortunate to combine those in a way that the potential is not realized. A problem that has a benefit of the excuse to get another snake(s)
hey i am looking into breeding hogs what morphs should i get i can have 6 hogs max
