I purchased this baby hognose from a store, sold simply as 66% het permafrost. They had no other information. I brought it is as they didn’t seam to have a clue what they were doing.
That said I have never heard of a permafrost morph (I’m new to hog noses) and can’t seem to accurately ID this from my own knowledge or research.
In the light she looks almost caramel, belly is black with the normal yellow checks in places.
Some green ish hues near her head and her tail is almost axanthic.
Welcome! What you have is likely what you purchased it as. Permafrost isn’t a morph itself, it’s a morph combo. Your animal is just a normal hognose, 66% possibly het for Sable, Caramel, and Evan’s Hypo, the three morphs that make up Permafrost. Can I ask why you thought they didn’t know what they were doing?
Also for the future, Caramels do not have black tones as it is a form of albinism, and Axanthic would remove the red and yellow to make the snake look more monochromatic.
Thanks for that info I appreciate that. Lots of reasons but mainly told me they don’t need heat room temp is fine, told me to feed a pinkie every 4 days and they don’t burrow
Well depending on your room temperature, they’re not wrong on the heat thing. Mine are all kept at room temp. Hognoses in the wild have a very wide range, including up into some very cold states. I keep mine about 70-75ºF in the winter, and they get up to about 80-85ºF in the summer with temps lower at night, higher during the day.
As for the feeding, every 4 days is correct as well, depending on the size of the animal. Hognoses tend to do better with meals no larger than the thickest part of their body. Ectotherm Empire has a really good hognose feeding guide:
Honestly the only thing they were really wrong about was the burrowing.
Ok I’ve never heard of feeding that often so my mistake, I’m uk so my room would be around 64/66f which I thought would be too cold?
Also she almost looks low expression conda with the thin white side or is that in my head?
I’ve got to learn fast I think I’ve always had kings and corns never a hognose
That is likely a bit colder than what you’d want, so I’d definitely use heat in your case to ensure good feeding and digestion.
As for LE Conda, she is not. The Anaconda morph reduces the pattern along the back and sides, as well as makes the belly solid black (though not in all cases). Most, if not all hognoses have that lighter delineation where the bottom row of side scales meets the belly scutes.
Thanks again
No problem. There are a few resources available to learn more about the morphs. Here on MorphMarket we have the Morphpedia, which has information on ten morphs at the moment. There is also a website, Hognose-morphs.com, that has a database of all the morphs and combos, however I will pre-warn you that I have not verified that all the info is correct, and there’s no information as to who created the website itself.
Ok I shall bare that in mind I was just curious mainly it doesn’t effect husbandry just their appearance I’m happy if she’s healthy
Always good to be curious! As you’re new to hognoses, I’ll also link you to this guide by Cleo’s Kingdom Colubrids on hognose dos and do nots for new owners. I’m sure you’re aware they can be stubborn little buggers, so don’t hesitate to ask more questions if you need a hand.
