I had to assist my hatchlings from snowflake eggs three days ago. They weigh 1.3g and they still have not shed yet, skin looks shiny and have been keeping them under humidity 70-90. Thought they needed strength to shed, so they had 2-3 bites of superfood and had to stop them because they ate aggressively. They are in seperate delicups with substrate things to rub off skin. I didn’t damp the whole towel though because if I do, then humidity spikes over 90.. Is there anything I can do?
My biggest suggestion is to be patient for now. It can take up to four days and maybe even longer. Were they assisted hatchlings? If so then it could take longer for them. A little superfood is fine but keep in mind that babies generally will not eat a full meal until after their first shed.
Also, let them experience a natural drop in humidity during the day (around 50–60%) and spike it high at night when you mist, rather than keeping it pinned over 90% all day long.
Is it possible they’ve already shed? Are you seeing any wrinkled or stuck pieces of skin specifically on their toes or the tip of their tail?
@yj1 the likelihood of you knowing when they have their first shed is very low unless you are watching them 24/7 and witness them begin to shed. They eat their own shed and rarely leave any traces outside of stuck shed on their toes or tail.
I’ve owned Cresties for years and I myself have only witnessed one shedding maybe once or twice.
I see nothing on them..but their skin looks super shiny? glossy? I have experience with hatching and I always saw them in stuck pieces of shed..but these snowflake hatchlings seem different..they did poo and they had their second superfood today..
Understood, if that’s the case then they might be late shedders. I don’t think there is anything physically wrong with them but be cautious just in case. As long as they’re active, eating, and using the bathroom it should be okay. Give it time.
For what it’s worth I have never seen any of my crestie’s shed…….
