How to get her to be more comfortable

So i got my first ball python around February this year, she is at the time of writing this 9 months old, im feeding her weekly 2 pinkies as she is still fairly small and i dont know if i should up her feeding size to fuzzies (rats), she is mostly im her hide all night (i cant really sleep so im awake aswell :joy:) i read that it can help sitting at her enclosure for around an hour daily with sliding doors open and let her know that way you arent predator, but she just lays her head on the substrate and looks at me still mostly inside her hide not coming out. Last week i had her out and letting her explore my pc setup and sheets on my bed but now she is just in her hide all night peeling her head put only except for feeding friday :joy: but she did take her pinky inside her hide last week to turn it around cause she realised swallowing it sideways wasnt gonna happen

At 9 months old she should be eating much larger meals. My hatchling ball pythons typically start out on rat fuzzies. The only time I was feeding pinkies was when I hatched out an adorable little runt 1/2 the size of a normal hatchling.

If you can post a photo of her so we can see her body condition that can help along with her weight in grams. If she’s skinny you may need to slowly up the size of her meals, but she should easily be able to eat a fuzzy rat.
Generally, a BP should eat a meal around 10-15% of their body weight. It’s an easy guideline to remember. How often can depend on the body condition of the snake.

Behavioral stuff … BPs are ambush hunters by nature. In the wild it’s pretty easy to find them in rodent burrows or termite mounds underground. They’re not as active a species as some colubrids or semi arboreal species can be.

Her sitting cozy with her head out is basically her being comfortable enough to keep from hiding or defense postures. She’s basically just chilling out and waiting for door dash. Some of these little guys are home bodies while some others will actively come towards doors when you open them.
She just may need a little more time out after you sit with the door open to realize that door open time like that means she can go explore.

Hmmmm. That’s a pretty good idea!!! Seriously though she certainly is doing exactly what a lot of bps do. After all, why go out for food when your food delivers itself! :joy:

Definitely need to size up those meals as @armiyana suggests. Do you mean Rat pinkies or Mouse Pinkies?? That makes a pretty serious difference.

I have month old hatchlings easily eating bigger meals (rat fuzzies) than your 9 month old so I am concerned about the BP’s body condition.

My best advice for you to get her on properly sized meals is to get a gram scale if you don’t have one already and weigh your BP in grams.

See how much she weighs and then adjust her meals from there. BPs should be eating 10% of their body weight in rats every 10 days.

For example if she weighs 350 grams, you’ll want to feed 35-40 gram rats and adjust that as she grows.

She actually doesn’t look that terrible for eating pinkies, just a tad underweight I’m sure she’ll catch up pretty well.

Thats a relief to hear, ill get some bigger meals for her asap, everything is closed right now due to easter, i weighed her just now to get her weight and im pretty sure she is starting a shed too(when i got her out her eyes was looking a little milky), so i feel bad for her now🥺 she is around 200grams in weight

She looks like she’s been maintaining pretty well. If she’s just starting to go into shed I would wait until after to offer her a bigger meal. The shed process is already one you don’t want to interrupt and it can make them more likely to regurge if they aren’t used to that meal size.

She’s a little cutie tho! Hopefully she’ll figure out there’s more interesting things outside soon
