How to keep substrate out of pond in Water Monitor Enclosure

Hello, I currently have a yearling Cummingi Water Monitor. He’s in a 8x4x8 and I have 20” deep substrate, around my 100 gallon pond. I large boulders around the pond but he loves to dig (as he should) and gets in the pond with all the dirt in him. Can you recommend a filter set up, I’m currently using a Fluval FX6 and as you well know, isn’t working too well:joy::joy::joy:. Please provide recommendations on how I can tackle this issue. I would love to have clear water:joy::joy::joy::joy::pray:t4::pray:t4::pray:t4:. Thanks in advance

I am creating a bog that is 30% of the size of the pond and that will keep the water clear even when dirt is thrown in the pond. I have had great success with this process and it eliminates water changes and only need to clean out the pipes maybe 2 times per year. Prior to using a bog filter system I was changing up to 1200 gallons of water daily and that was a pain. Tried canister filters etc none worked. But using the natural bog filter system finally had clean water.

Rough sketch but gives idea of how I do it.

That water evenly travels up through the 1/2 river rock and then the marginal plants will filter the water naturally. No need for chemical to keep clean this does it very well and keeps water crystal clear. I will have a depth of 18 inches of rock and 2 feet wide and 4 feet long. So it’s a lot of rock but worth it.

Did you mean daily? That is a crazy amount of water to charge out every day. I would love to have an Asian Water one day…definitely would want to have the enclosure outside though.

Actually he is a varanus cumingi and I am in the process of building his cage now. For one hundred gallons you only need a 30 gallon bog filter system

That’s my little guy now. I live in the Philippines now so no need to add anything artificial will be all natural

Here is a list of some great plants that are native to where he is from to help create a natural jungle for him

also they really love to climb here in the wild almost always in the trees so it’s a good idea to increase the height of your enclosure to as high as you can and create a high hide for it to feel safe. They even do this when full grown especially during rainy season because the jungle floor turns into a giant bog and water marsh
