Hybrid Categories are now live

We’re excited to announce the release of three brand-new Hybrid categories on MorphMarket:

Hybrid Pythons
Hybrid Boas
Hybrid Colubrids

These new sections make it easier to properly list, search, and explore animals that fall outside pure species. They also bring much-needed structure and transparency to a part of the hobby that has historically been difficult to navigate.

For anyone wanting a closer look at how traits are structured inside the new Hybrid categories, here are direct links to each group, and small explanations:

Hybrid Pythons

  • Species Tags - These cover the parentage itself, and should be used to define the species involved. For Example: Ball + Borneo.

  • Hybrid Combos - We also support hybrid combos within Hybrid categories, such as Rockball = Ball + Rock

  • Species Specific Trait Tags - Hybrid categories support all the same trait tags used in the pure species pages. To keep everything clear and searchable, each trait is automatically appended with the species short name. This prevents cross-species ambiguity while still making every inherited trait available.

    Examples:

  • Albino (Ball)

  • Albino (Retic)

  • Albino (Carpet)

  • Albino (Burmese)

This also allows you to search all traits across a species:

If you’re working with hybrids, feel free to explore these tags and let us know if you spot anything missing, mis-categorized, or needing refinement. We’re continuing to tune the system as we go. We will also be expanding Hybrid categories into more groups in the future as we continue improving the system.

A quick note:
The hybrid trait systems are still new and being built out. While the categories are fully active, we are not enforcing their use just yet . Once the trait structure is finalized, hybrid listings will need to be placed in their appropriate categories.

This is a great update. I really hope it helps with transparency, especially in the colubrid category. Looking forward to getting the kinks worked out of this.

Just to clarify, anyone with a hybrid should still be using the ‘other’ category for their ads, not just listing them as if it were a pure blood. Eg: 3/4 corn 1/4 rat should be listed in other colubrids?

Anyone with Hybrids should be using the new Hybrid categories, but no ones going to get into trouble for continuing to use the Other categories for the time being.

Awesome. I should have specified the other category until full release and enforcement for hybrid. =)
I think I tagged a few hybrids in the wrong categories in the past. So just not wanting to make more work for support by tagging ads as being incorrectly ‘other’ category instead of hybrid for now.

Will there be definitions set to what is a Hybrid?
I’m thinking in the Boa section. Obviously, a cross between a Boa and an Anaconda or an ETB x an ATB would be a definite hybrid.
I’m guessing the result of pairing a Bcc x Bci or a Bca x Bcc, for example would be? What about the pairing of two localities that are both Bci, like a Hog Island x a common Bci?

Locality is usually the same species, so I don’t believe it should count as hybrids in that case. Although sometimes updates in taxonomy changes everything and ugh…

In the case of one like BCC x BCI- Iirc… Scientifically they are no longer recognized as individual subspecies and are considered different species entirely so that would need the hybrid tags.

Either way that should all be hashed out before the full release and tag updates I would think. So I’m sure Thomas or Brit will update us then
