Hybrid Colubrids?

I have been looking at the “Other Colubrid” category in the Marketplace. And I have noticed that there are several different hybrids that are available. With all of the morphs and types on the planet, why are people trying to invent new ones?

I always put it down to the ‘George Mallory’ school of reasoning

I think the unpredictability of hybrid pairings is appealing to some breeders.

Correct me here if I am wrong but can creating all these different combinations weaken the health of the snake in general? Or at least on occasion?

Or is this not the case? It seems like the normal anything is becoming a thing of the past! Lol!

@thebeardedherper I think you’ll have a bit more expertise in this area

Yes and no

There are certainly morphs and combinations that result in failure to thrive, in general the hobby tends to weed those combinations out over time

Beyond that though, a lot of these mutations are to non-critical genes so there is no cumulative deleterious effect

Thank you for clearing things up a bit for me. I suppose all this mixing and matching is exciting and rewarding for the breeder as long as the health of the snake is not compromised as a result.

Have a blessed day!:slightly_smiling_face:

I feel that in some instances hybridization has helped to bolster a species where others have been very detrimental such as Ligers. Some hybridization has occured naturally where the similar species overlaps such as Gaboon/Rhino viper hybrid. For the most part hybridization is for human vanity, a i wonder if i could cross X with X species. I don’t have an issue with hybrids so long as they aren’t bred intentionally with defects or what would be tantamount to torture. Secondly so long as someone kept it as their own or if sold as a KNOWN hybrid.

As long as its not done with tarantulas!

How about scorps? :joy: one of the breeders i know said he accidentally bred 2 different Leiurus, but thats not really a hybrid since locality is the only difference ( we see that in some snakes like Rosys ) dude was kinda freaked im like it’ll be ok same species, who knows maybe you will get a cool morph :woman_shrugging:

Do not let dart frog people hear you say that LOL

I 100% agree! Locality is super important to dart people.
