Hypo Pieds eye problem in burmese pythons

Hey,

I got a male burmese python, he is really healthy and a good eater and I wanted to get him a fitting female. I found several females, specific a Hypo Caramel Pied. I heard and saw that Hypo Pieds in burmese pythons has problems with smaller eyes, is that a big problem for breeding?

Best regards

Pied snakes can have the small eyes/bead eye/microphthalmia issue when mixed with certain genes

In BPs it’s pied albinos and Blue eye Lucy Pieds that can be born with that issue very often.

I personally try to avoid it. I did produce one BP pied combo with small eyes this year, proving a single BEL gene can cause the issue as well as the visual.
I don’t think it should be encouraged to continue breeding things that can be detrimental to the animal. So that pairing will not be continued.

There are many people who will also say it’s a non issue unless the eye is also deformed in a different way or if they hatch without one or both eyes. Then that is an animal you would not want to breed.

It really does just boil down to how responsible you want to be with your breedings and if you want to take the risk on having them pop up in your clutches.

Hey,

thanks for the message, thats why I want to inform myself of that issue. I don’t want to breed burmese pythons with deformed body parts.
My male is a Granite 100% het. Caramel 50% dh. Albino/Pied so a Caramel Pied female would be perfect.
