Hello! I need help figuring out what type of carpet python I have. I am wanting to breed him, but super unsure of his lineage and his genetics. His name is Draco and he was labeled as a jungle carpet python when I purchased him at a reptile store in Arizona. I have been told by other snake hobbyist that he’s part coastal, papuan, or just that they were unsure. I’m mad because I want to breed him since he’s really stunning but in my eyes he’s for sure not a true jungle carpet python. I would love some insight and if anyone could really help my out it would be amazing if I can put a true name to his morph. He’s about 5 feet 7 inches fully grown male. He’s about maybe 4 inches around in girth. Haven’t measured it really before but he’s pretty damn girthy lol might be even more than that. He’s a confirmed male. If you aren’t sure but know someone who can positively identify the specific lineage he is, I would soooo greatly appreciate it. He’s absolutely stunning after his shed and lots of these photos are of him after shed. Thank you!
Looks like a Papuan/Irian Jaya or a northwestern to me. The orange brown color, size.
I kept a trio of IJ’s for @ a decade and they looked just like yours.
Of course, with the designer breeding he could be a combo of different locales like coastal, jungle, north western or even part bredli. Then add in the various mutations and who knows.
Ask the store you got him from for any background info and see if you can track down a previous owner.
Papuan would be my guess.
Regardless of species, I think most breeders would recommend not breeding an animal with unclear genetics and lineage, both for health (of parents and offspring) and financial reasons. Ofc if you were looking to keep all his offspring and not looking to sell them, the issue is lessened, but I’d just want to warn you the babies would probably need to be pet only because of the unknown genetics, and you probably wouldn’t be selling to other breeders.
Thank you for the information! I tried calling them and they weren’t very nice. Not the best store and they said they couldn’t give his information out lol. But I’ll probably end up getting a pair from someone who knows the lineage. Would love to see some photos of your carpets!
Appreciate that insight. I agree totally. I’ll keep him as a pet but he really has pushed me to start a carpet python project in the near future and I’ll most likely get a pair of carpets that I know the history of. Thanks!
