I know I’ve posted a couple of similar things before, but I really enjoyed getting to share babies as they hatched when I did this a couple years ago, so I decided to do it again! Plus I like walking people through my thought process so that those coming in to breeding have good advice.
For this year, gecko-wise, I’m planning on breeding cresties, chahouas, and chameleon geckos. Let’s start with the crestie pairings!
First off, Blossom is going to Soldier Boy and I’m hoping for some nice red lillies if possible. I don’t know that SB has any red in his lineage but I’m not convinced the red base is a simple recessive, so we’ll see what we get! These two have had one lock (and one time SB missed…):
Pandemonium is going to Prokofiev for hopefully some amazing tri-colors. Prokofiev comes from amazing tri-color lineage and Pandemonium hasn’t accepted him yet, so I’m considering just cohabitating the two of them for a period of time. We’ve tried two pairings and she seems entirely uninterested. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out:
Next, for chahouas: I don’t know that either of these pairings are going to take this year, but I’m going to give it a try.
Twi’lek (proven breeder from ET geckos) will be going to Abydos (young male also from ET geckos) just as soon as he gets big enough. He’s around 45g right now and she’s around 65, so I want him to be minimum 50 grams but probably closer to 55. Since it’s his first year and she’s a proven breeder she may reject him, but we’re going to try a mid-season pairing with swapping decor and enclosures to get them used to each others’ scents first. If it doesn’t take this year, no biggie:
The next pair I plan to put together this year will be Maze and Raziel. They’re both abut to be three years old (Maze turns 3 in June). With chahouas it’s strongly recommended to wait until the girls are three years old, so this will be another mid-late season pairing. Again, if it doesn’t take, no biggie. (Raziel is very dark and in shed in this photo):
Now for the chameleon geckos! I have two pairs, but only one pair is big enough to breed this year. Ginger, the female, is well old and large enough, so I’m just waiting for Carrot (the male - he has a little orange on his hips) to put on another gram or so and then they will go in together as well! These guys are so small that another breeder recommended handling babies with a q-tip when they hatch:
All right, that’s all of this year’s planned pairings! I will update as things take or don’t take, and hopefully, as we get and hatch eggs!
