Hey guys! Looking for some advice. I need general liability or agritainment insurance! I want to do reptile educational programs, and obviously need insurance to go to schools/events!
NY state, been having issues finding any online because any I click don’t have these options.
What other species do you think would be good? I’ve got some Ball pythons and boa constrictors for this, definitely getting a blue tongue skink, but snake wise I’m not sure what else!
I would most definitely include a corn snake and a rosy boa. I am going by what I have of course. Sand boas and nice too. A house snake would work as well.
What kind of snakes do you have access to? I have a male juvenile Woma python that’s an absolute puppy dog.
African house snakes will definitely be included! I plan on breeding them in the future. I did have a corn, but he just wasn’t a good fit for the program.
Rosy boas are pretty, so I’m very tempted to get one of those!!
Currently I have access to anything on MorphMarket! Budget right now is about $300 per animal I add. There’s nothing really local since my work schedule prevents me from going to most shows
Personally I don’t buy snakes anymore from expos because I got stung once.
I had a Stimsons python years ago that had a great temperament. I believe a Childrens or a Spotted pythonwould both be good as well. If you have 300.00 budgeted per snake you can easily go with several different types of smaller snakes like kings or milks, but milks are muskers….
I’ve actually heard corns musk quite a bit too! Corns are cool for sure, guess I’m just a little cautious due to my last one. Definitely want more boas and pythons added to the program, colubrids are still pretty new to me
Hooray for educational serpents and educational animals in general! I had many classroom pets and outreach animals over the years. I taught high school, worked with a number of student clubs and community groups. Did small and large scale educational events.
Not in my experience. I have had a very few new babies musk me in their earliest weeks when they are learning that I won’t eat them. I’ve never had any problems with them past that. That said, most of mine hatch friendly and curious, especially from certain bloodlines.
I don’t even know how many classroom corn snakes I had. (Plenty of other creatures, too.) I used to have two or three spaces in the classroom for their enclosures and different ones would be there for a semester and others would rotate in. Normally these were at least yearlings. Younger animals would come for a day or a week at times. The students loved it, the animals seemed to enjoy it. It was great.
Yes, you do. I’m not an insurance agent or a lawyer. Ican only tell you my own experience. You’ll need to talk with your insurance providers, potentially a lawyer, too, to ensure that your are covered. Venues and schools should provide you with info in writing about what is or is not covered. You will want to have something along the lines of an umbrella liability policy. We used to carry a hefty umbrella policy. This is in addition to any coverage you might have from the school. If you have an actual business, you’ll need insurance for that.
Specifics are going to depend upon what you’re found and what those entities require. It’s a marvelous thing to share animals with others. It’s important to make sure that you are going to be protected in the off chance that anything ever goes wrong. Btw, out of all the thousands of all ages who handled my corn snakes, no one was ever musked or bitten or harmed in any way. I confess that a couple were pooped on. Lol
Thanks for all the advice!! Still on the big search to find insurance companies (scoured half of google already lol). I think I’ll do either a scaleless corn or rat snake, and see about some other things!
I commend you for churching into and getting everything lined up before you move forward. In today’s world, liability insurance is a must.
Fwiw, scaleless corns do have somewhat more delicate skin than do animals with scales. Some ratties can have a bit of attitude, but many outgrow it. When you are ready to look for more animals (the one you posted is gorgeous!), do be very specific about what you’re looking for. The right friendly sweetheart animals are dwindling out there.
Very true! I’m definitely being very picky with personalities. I’m not against any species, so I’m sure I’ll find plenty that fit my specifications when I’m ready lol!
I did find that I can actually write up liability waivers. To start out, what are your guys thoughts? Definitely the cheaper option, legally binding that I’m not liable for anything listed (will be approved by a lawyer before I do this of course). I’m thinking this might be a good temporary option?
Maybe call some places in the area that do the aame thing but with other animals if u cant find a reptile specific one they might be able to point u in the right direction i love that snake picture u have
I recommend talking to someone in your state with legal expertise. It’s going to vary by state and possibly city.
Great idea! Perhaps a local rescue or humans society might be able to give you info. Even if you need to pay someone eventually, that will be much less expensive than a lawsuit. Hopefully it won’t ever be needed, but still. If you do larger venues or events, they will likely have some sort of insurance. You’ll want your own in addition.
