Hi, I have a question. About six months ago I made Lisa both a hammock and a slate basking spot (and for the basking spot I obviously followed the temperature guidelines – on the spot itself, next to it, and for the substrate).
She completely ignored both. Until two weeks ago, right after she’d shed and eaten again (she’s great with food, never skips a meal, sheddin went well, all in ‘one ‘piece’). Since then she’s been lying in the hammock regularly, and for the past week she’s also been using the basking spot now and then.
Is she just a bit ‘slow’ and has only now discovered them (I don’t need her to become a chess grandmaster, but still ;)), or could something else be making her seek out different spots? Nothing else has changed in the meantime – temperatures and humidity are consistently within the “official” guidelines.
Ball Pythons are not really naturally sun baskers (they are nocturnal) to start with, so that may be a reason why she’s rarely visited that spot of her enclosure.
I agree on sharing what her temps are though, especially on that basking slate… its very easy to overheat and burn their skin.
Thank you so much for your input! For the temperature and humidity, I’ve thoroughly studied Bob Bledsoe’s Green Room Pythons and the guidelines posted on Reddit. I put together a document based on that, but unfortunately I can’t find it right now (and I don’t know even 10% of it by heart) … I’ll look for it, because I want to check it again soon.
So getting any information from Reddit is risky. especially information concerning reptile care. I would stay away from those people.
I am simply asking in numbers what specific temperature do you keep the hot and the cold side. What is your humidity percentage as well? How hot is the basking spot?
