She appears to have used the dirt to fill in her burrow…so now she has no hide to retreat to. You do you, girlfriend!
So…I did a thing with some of the holiday money I got from relatives. I got three new spiders! But these spiders are very different from any I’ve had before…because they’re 65 million years old and encased in amber. So they should be super easy to care for! But I’m very excited for them to arrive.
Seriously? I can’t wait to see them! They sound intriguing!
Which brings me to remember the mosquito? that was encased in the amber head of the cane that the old scientist carried in Jurassic Park!
I actually got my mom a fly in amber for Christmas, and I kinda really liked it and almost didn’t want to give it to her.
So I decided I wanted my own amber inclusion, and thought, what’s cooler than a fly in amber? A SPIDER in amber, obviously. Then I found several I liked and couldn’t decide which one to get, so I got three.
My green bottle blue just molted but it was so difficult to get the molt out because it was stuck in all the webbing! You can see the new and improved GBB to the left!
Edit to add: Better picture of the new and improved GBB!
Got some new friends!! Some madagascar hissing cockroaches, a scarlet millipede, blue pigeon isopods, and white shark isopods!! I can’t get good pictures of the isopods cause they’re so small but here’s the other ones!
Very nice! I had a hisser colony for a little while while. They’re fun. But they can climb glass, and it turned out that the lid of the tank I was using was not totally secure. So that was a bit of a headache, but aside from that I really enjoyed them.
Love that millipede!
Well it turns out the lid of the enclosure i had it in was light enough that it could push it open and escape. I’m devestated. My room is a mess but i’m going through cleaning it today in hopes that i will find it and im also leaving out dishes of damp sphagnam moss and ill leave food out tonight if i can’t find it while cleaning.
My husband would have a “hissy” hissing fit” if he knew there was a loose hissing cockroach in the house!!!
Okay somehow by some miracle, after hours of me cleaning and searching, my dad walked in my room for two seconds and found it. I’m so relieved and happy. Also i have named it Nautilus because of how it looks when curled up.
Well look at it this way. You have a clean room and you also have your lil sneaky millipede back!
It was the millepede that escaped but yeah, very glad to have it back and clean room
Ops! I am so sorry! I like millipedes too!
I corrected it!
Yay, so glad you found it! Definitely weigh down that lid this time around!
Yep it is securely weighed down now! I heard that they were little escape artists but didn’t know how good they were until i got one lol. I am hoping to get some more scarlet millipedes soon as well as other types but he’s just my first little guy
Two out of three of my amber spiders arrived today!! They’re amazing. You can see them super clearly. One you can even see well enough to tell it’s a boy spider! You can clearly see the emboli on his little pedipalps, you can see little setae, it’s pretty amazing how perfectly preserved they are after all this time. They look like they could just skitter right out of the amber if they wanted to.
I’m still working out how best to photograph them. They’re pretty small (think the size of a small spider you’d find in your house), and I think it would be ideal to be able to shine a light behind the amber to illuminate as much detail as possible. So I promise I’ll share pictures, as soon as I figure out how to take said pictures.
Ok Jennifer! If you say so!
All three of my amber spiders are here, and I got some pictures by holding them up to my window.
Here’s the biggest piece with the most going on. We’ve got a spider, a fly, and a bunch of plant debris at the bottom. You can’t see it in the pictures, but there’s actually a spider molt in there too, presumably from that spider.
This one is the boy spider. This piece was the hardest to photograph, probably because it’s the smallest, but hopefully you can make out his little boxing gloves on his palps.
This last one might be my favourite. I love the pose of the spider, and the way it’s right in the middle of the piece of amber.
Those are incredible Jennifer! So how old are the spiders? They remind me a bit of my little wolf spider! And how did they get in the amber?
Definitely conversation pieces!!!
They’re about 65 million years old. So these spiders (and the fly) were living alongside the dinosaurs, which is pretty freaking cool to think about. I think it’s really interesting how little spiders have changed in all that time. These guys look just like modern spiders. I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Amber is fossilized tree sap, so these critters were presumably just hanging out on a tree, minding their own business, watching dinosaur battles, when they got covered in a glob of tree sap. Then that tree sap fossilized, and eventually some guy in Poland found it, collected it, polished it, and sold it to me.
