Oh yeah forgot I am gonna get a Dune Scorpion in a month or two after spring break
Here’s a pic of it at the pet shop born on November 29th
I also collected some Isopods from outside probably 15-20 specimens I assume it’s an Armadilidium sp. if you have any idea let me know I am not the best at identification
I would recommend against this. Drastically adjusting the T’s environment and removing sources of security at a time when it is most vulnerable is asking for problems.
I totally agree.
As has been said, definitely don’t do this. It will just create undue stress for no good reason. Tarantulas molt in burrows, under logs, in tree hollows, in web tunnels, etc. all the time. They need to be able to hide and feel secure. Having a hide is not going to impair their ability to molt. No need to cover the enclosure either. Just leave everything as it is and leave your spider alone to do its thing.
The only thing I change at all when I know one of my Ts is nearing a molt is just that I’m extra vigilant about making sure they have access to water. Normally I’ll let the water dishes dry out between refillings, but when a spider is about to molt, I keep the water dish full at all times, just to make sure they have access to water after molting, since they lose moisture during that process. But that’s literally the only thing I change. And honestly, it’s probably not even necessary, plenty of people don’t give their Ts water dishes at all, but it doesn’t harm the spider and it gives me some peace of mine.
Wow what an awesome looking set up! Those hermies are living in a palace!
Very nice!!! Love the little mushrooms.
Did you ever figure out what was going on with the crab who had been buried so long?
So i slowly and carefully moved sand until i found it. It seems like it’s fine but i didn’t see much of it cause i didn’t want to disturb it too much. I covered it back up and smoothed out the sand and since its alone in this enclosure i should see clawprints if it comes back up. Hopefully it’ll reemerge soon!
My big boy will sometimes bury for 6 weeks or more, we just keep the food and water fresh and we only dig him up if its been more than 2 weeks - usually he is a cranky man, but let me tell you when he comes back up voluntarily he is visibly post molt and MUCH LARGER haha!
Bittersweet day today.
My last hermit crab, Kirby, of the 5 I used to have was always going to be my last hermie, and he seemed okay as a loner so I figured it would end when he passed.
But a nearby keeper has put together a 180 gallon bioactive enclosure for her 8 large hermies, and she has space for a new friend - I think it is time to rehome Kirby for his own health and happiness. This makes me very sad, but if he can spend the rest of his days in paradise with other crabs I have to give him that chance…
I know how hard it was for you to give up a beloved pet. But you have given him the greatest gift of love by sending him to a paradise to commune with others of his own kind! So cheer up kiddo! He will be one happy camper!
I hope so! Plus we can always get photo updates!
And check out her enclosure, I’d be crazy not to take this opportunity for my boy! 180 gallons of paradise!
Holy moly I would say your little hermit will thank you until the end of his days! That tank is gigantic!
I couldn’t pass up a tank like that for him! Her single crab quarentine tank is 20 gallons!
Its very sad for me, but he is going to be so happy there and that’s what matters most
Oh man, that’s tough, but I think you’re making the right decision. I almost always see hermit crabs in groups in the wild. On the rare occasion I see one off by itself, it usually appears to be moving towards other hermit crabs. They seem to be very social, so I’m sure Kirby would prefer to be with other hermit crabs. But I get that it’s very sad to say goodbye.
That’s the hardest part about social animals like hermits, rats and mice, ferrets and guinea pigs, etc - when they all pass but one you either repeat the cycle and purchase more friends or keep them lonely when you know it isn’t best, so this seems like the best compromise for my crabby boy
