Hello! I am getting a hognose snake and I wanted to ask what current hognose owners would recommend for heat and uvb lamps? As well as what kind of thermometers and timers would be recommended?
for uvb I get a, 5% to 7% T5 HO linear UVB fluorescent tub, and for heat lamps par 38 halogen flood bulb usually works great and zoo med usually sells thermometers and timers that work great! (UVB is optional for hognose snakes not all recommend it, so for a begginer you might not need uvb) for male hognose snakes a 10-20 gallon works good females a 40 gallon, just a warning I don’t own hogs at the moment but I got this information from various hognose keepers/ breeders :D! along with research I did when I was into getting one myself! hope this helps! but do you know what size enclosure your getting this is for a 40 gallon as an example if you get a 10-30 gallon it would be different.
Making UV and heat recommendations without even knowing what type/size enclosure is being planned is, well, problematic. If this is going into a 10g aquarium for example (not uncommon), that equipment is going to be dangerous. I know such comments are intended to be helpful, I’m not saying otherwise.
I’ve produced and sold probably not too many more than 50 hognose, and only have seven in my collection right now, so I’m not super experienced with them. But I do know the sorts of issues that new keepers run into in these sorts of situations. I spend too much time sorting through third-hand stuff new herp owners have been told before they come to me to buy a reptile. I feel really bad when I have to tell people that starting over from ground zero with their equipment is the best thing they could do to be successful. Some people cuss me out for it (very rarely, and usually online, but still).
I’d recommend talking to the breeder – you’re buying directly from the breeder, right? Good. – to get their recommendations in addition to any other experienced hognose keepers you might talk to (expos are good places to talk to breeders, even if they’re not always the best places for purchasing).
When I sell a hognose (or similar herp), I recommend to the prospective owner that they consider these facts:
Starting a reptile in an enclosure similar to the one it is used to helps ease the transition. Usually, a breeder is going to be keeping them in a tub, and not one that’s too large. A shift to a fish tank with UVB is not uncommonly too much for the snake to deal with, and they stop feeding. And since troubleshooting hognose feeding issues is too often overwhelming for first time keepers (no, don’t try to get it eat by feeding it frogs!), minimizing the variables helps.
Long term, glass enclosures have disadvantages (not that you said, OP, but this is the place to start since heating and lighting follows from this). They don’t offer a sense of security for the animal; they don’t hold heat well, and screen tops with lights on them don’t hold moisture well (not a big deal for a hognose, moisture). They’re not always very secure (swing door glass enclosures with small snakes in them too often become swing door glass enclosures without small snakes in them). They’re more complicated to rig up a thermostat probe for any overhead heat relative to other options.
I prefer PVC display enclosures, and I heat them with radiant heat panels (less expensive, safer, and lower power consumption than lights, and they can be run at night too – all the herps I keep thermoregulate equally at night and during the day). I strongly recommend Herpstat thermostats for running any heating equipment. For a thermometer, any IR temp gun works as well as any other, and they’re a mandatory piece of equipment for herpkeeping.
I recommend against UVB (to new keepers, not only because they’re the ones most likely to listen
) for (a) any species that doesn’t need it to produce Vitamin D, (b) any keeper who isn’t willing to meter it to make sure it is both safe and effective, and (c) any keeper who doesn’t know enough about the species to figure out how to design an enclosure that enables the animal to self-regulate their own UV exposure. The ‘look at the chart and throw a lamp on there’ sort of commentary that’s common is troubling.
