I was told tanimbar locality he’s a male, is that right?
Tanimbar looks correct from what I can see, granted my bluey ID is a bit rusty. Do you know if he’s captive bred or wild caught? I don’t think there are too many tanny breeders so it would surprise me if he’s captive bred.
Editing to add: it could be an Irian Jaya instead which are highly variable in color and can sometimes have overlapping traits with other subspecies. They have an orange belly whereas tanimbars have a yellow-gold or cream colored belly.
Photo bellow of the belly, why does no one breed tanimbars?
It’s not that no one breeds them, they are just few and far between. I could count the number of tanimbar breeders on one hand. They tend to lean on the more aggressive side compared to other indo species and because of that there isn’t as high of a market for them. I believe they are also harder to breed compared to the super popular Northern.
I see more that are sold as CB (captive born from a wild caught female) rather than CBB (captive bred and born).
He’s really handsome @ladoona! ![]()
Interesting mine is puppy dog tame can do anything with him, is crossing localities frowned upon?
That’s great yours is so chill ![]()
By crossing localities are you referring to breeding two different subspecies? If so, it depends on who you ask. Hybridization happens both intentionally and accidentally and that would be a negative for those looking for a pure line.
For instance, Irian Jayas are so variable that someone could breed it to, say a Merauke thinking they are the same species and unintentionally creating hybrids.
It becomes a bigger issue when crossing an Indo species with an Australian. There is a large difference between husbandry for the two areas and any offspring from the pair can be very difficult to properly care for.
It is also illegal to export animals out of Australia so the lines we have now are all that can be accessed. For the less common species like Easterns, Blotched or Westerns that would not be good to have them crossed with another species.
I hope that answers your question. This was something I researched extensively a bit ago and I may have nerded out a bit ![]()
Yes it was just sub species if I can’t find a female basically. But if he is definitely a tanimbar I’ll have to wait but no one will sex the CF imports we get
so I might be out of luck entirely. I wouldn’t breed across continent it would be Indo to Indo etc.
Sexing blue tongues is difficult. Some seasoned breeders can take an educated guess but the only confirmed methods are through breeding or contrast radiographs. And I think there is a company who has a reliable shed test now. Even breeding isn’t 100% because I know someone who had a male that acted like a female and would allow other males to mount/breed him.
If breeding is your long term goal I’d recommend you establish a relationship with a mentor or two. When I was trying my hand at breeding Meraukes I had two mentors, breeders I had purchased from. It was a blessing to have someone to consult and bounce ideas off of.
Regardless of what you choose I hope you will continue to post your journey here!
