I have had my male and female together since Sunday around 4 pm. They have been locked ever since. Is this a good sign?
Any lock is a good sign. But no guarantee it will produce anything. Just like humans, everything needs to be be right timing.
Like @d_y_python said any lock is a good sign to behold when you are trying to breed, but if it really comes down to a lot of factors that come before and after now if the pairing is going to be successful or not.
Ok so with that being said, when i take the male out do you suggest putting him back in after a certain time and if so how l9ng do you do this for.
Most people I know of, who don’t have an ultrasound, will lock up the snakes again every month of every 5/6 weeks. I give my snakes 2 or 3 days to lock up. I might have missed it, but if I open a tub on Day 2 and the male and female are on separate ends, and haven’t wanted to mingle together I’ll just take the guy out. No point in wasting their time if they don’t want to do the deed.
Firstly a lock is good news. congrats.
Have you seen a proper lock for a whole 3 days? hemipenes engaged? or just positioned well?
3 days properly locked the whole time continually seems a lot to me.
I don’t think that question has been answered.
is 3 days plus for a proper continual full lock normal or known? that’s my question.
I know sometimes locks can go wrong for the males hemipenes causing disengaging problems. especially if substrate is taken up too.
Maybe others can help me with that question
I think what @akmorphs posted is the normal. As long as they keep locking you can keep putting them together. But definitely give them time apart. We make sure they eat before putting them back together. Once they do nothing, a couple times, then we stop the cycle.
This is my question, too. I don’t work with BPs, so I don’t know. @paganballz2021, did you mean that they were literally locked without separating for the entire 3 days?
That does seem like a very long time. I mean, just saying it sounds long.
Just to chime in, I have a male that would breed anything you put with him. He locked with a female 2 years ago multiple times for 36-48 hours, consistently.
My clown girl Mango will easily stay locked for 3 days with any male I put in with her. She’s very…uh…receptive and welcoming
Everytime i checked on them they were locked. They finally stopped yesterday so i took him out and fed him. So if they unlocked i wouldnt know.
Everytime i checked on them they were locked
That is a very nice way to put it . Never mind that lol
Thanks for the clarification, everybody. I truly did not know that BPs could mate for such extended periods of time. That’s not the case for corn snakes, nor for any of the other creatures with which I’ve dealt. Heck, some of them complete mating so quickly, it’s much better measured in seconds, not days. Always interesting to learn more about our fascinating world!
TBH first thing I thought is damn what a STUD you should rename the male Chad lol.
