Male thrashing after removing from mating, any tips? have you had this?

One of my males (only one) sometimes freaks out if I move him after mating.
He will thrash around, not settle, wreck the tank and even knock over his heavy stoneware water bowl.

The only thing I can do is leave him with the female longer, be a gentle as possible, and when he is at his worst, put him back with the female.

Has anyone else had this, any tips? Any advice appreciated.

I have only heard about this on one place - Green Room Pythons had one like this when moving after mating but I cant find the video and haven’t seen this anywhere else. That was also a banana coincidentally.

This is the one with a temper (He is bigger now than the picture)

I had a male get like that one year. I definitely was weird going from a slightly flighty BP boy to a really good impression of a wild king snake baby. We had the works… Musk, open mouth and just whipping around.

I got lucky and he just kinda got past that phase and was fine after a couple months. I don’t know if he just had to work out some testosterone or what… In my case it was a young male and his first year breeding if that helps as far as info.

That’s…well, that’s wild!

I know thar BPs and corns have very different breeding behaviors so if this is a completely out-of-line possibility, I apologize. Is there a reason he can’t stay in there with the female for an extra day or two?

@armiyana thanks, . That’s reassuring at least its not just me and hopefully he will get over it when his hormones stabilise a bit with age.

I do leave him in longer than others and sometimes have to put him back.
But I don’t want to leave him in too long as Besides the need to feed, there can be alot of fecal mater sprayed around and combined with the high humidity at those times, that is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Gotcha. That makes sense. Hopefully your boy will settle down in the future. Individuals in every species are just that, individual. I’m curious, how does this male’s typical behavior compare to that of your others?

Yea hopefully it will settle down.
He is the only one ever to do this with me. The others are always fine so far.
I did have a huge male black pine snake that would rise up and body slam me sometimes, but that was decades ago and he was fine when separated

So he’s basically throwing a tantrum when you ahem hemipenis-block him? Poor guy. :joy:

That’s actually pretty interesting, I had no idea this was a thing that happened. Though as someone who has had “the mood” totally ruined by my cats, I must say, I can empathize with his frustration. Having another species get in the way of you closing the deal is supremely annoying.

Tantrum sounds right, but I always move him a good while after they separate. Maybe he sees me as a competitor male moving in on his girl.

Or maybe he just didn’t think he was done yet? :person_shrugging::joy:
