I was recently at an aquarium that had a display where they were cohabitating a group of Amazon Milk Frogs and a single Vietnamese Mossy Tree Frog.
It got me thinking about whether this is an advisable setup. I’m not someone who takes cohabitating lightly, even when it doesn’t involve different species.
Curious to know what everyone’s thoughts are concerning the housing of these two species in the same enclosure?
Definitely sounds like a bad idea, much for the same reason cohabbing different dart frog species and locales is looked down upon. Due to not coming from the same geographical area, they can give each other diseases that they’re not immune to. There’s also size difference issues, but from a quick Google search both species due seem to be around the same size. That being said they really shouldn’t be kept together
I agree, this likely wouldn’t work well and it would be better to keep them separately (I have wondered about 2 right triangle shaped enclosures next to each other, it would look like they’re the same enclosure but it’s safe for the frogs). Especially since they’re both tree frogs that use the same space, something like a dart frog (theoretical, in reality that wouldn’t work) would be better since they stay on the ground (in reality they don’t) and the tree frogs stay in the arboreal area. A note on zoo and aquarium setups, keep in mind that the purpose of animals in a zoo is to display them. So often different species are mixed together in gigantic enclosures. Some zoos cycle animals around so none of them are in a stressful environment for too long.
Would housing a couple of different tree frogs of similar size and locale be ok to do? I’ve got an empty enclosure and was thinking frogs for it.
I wouldn’t but it depends. What are the species and size of the enclosure?
Enclosure would be 18x18x24. Undecided on species. Wanted to know which ones I can mix together.
That seems too small for two species. I think you would be able to use different morphs/phases of white’s dumpy tree frogs.
Ok cool. Sounds like a plan. I will look into those. Appreciate it!
Definitely do not house 2 different species together.
Dart frogs and day geckos though, yes!
We have a day gecko now! Her name is Ivy. I’ll get a picture later if I can. So I HAVE been trying to convince the wife we need a dart frog in with her!
Oh what type?
Darts Don’t really do well alone, so you need a group! Usually 1 female and 2 males when it comes to frogs!
Do it! Say that Ivy is so so lonely
I’m thinking of the Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Azureus’ because the camp she works at and where the enclosure will ultimately end up has a dark blue color scheme.
So 1 girl and 2 boys? I think I can do that!
They’re lovely, we used to have them, bigger type too.
Yes, or just a pair would be fine to be honest, just only 1 female basically, more than 1 female and they kill each others eggs or eachother, and they just fight. Little buggers really!
I wouldn’t recommend anything other than a 1.1 pair but 2.1 is better than 1.2. I have 2.1 tincs (azureus) right now and once thy mature I’m going to put a 1.1 pair in an 18x18x24. I decided not to mix mourning geckos or dart frogs because of the risk of pathogens and it’s easier to take care of them alone. Additionally I don’t want to provide the heat that day geckos need in a dart frog enclosure. Once I have more experience with the darts I might add a couple mourning geckos but I’m not sure yet.
Yeah, a lot of people keep trios. I’m on a lot of frog groups haha as we have had alsorts!
Mixing is fine, we have Never had an issue over the years of having all types of frogs, the Williamsi has been in with them all!
They don’t really any heat like lamps etc. The lights and uv is enough for the frogs, and the geckos. If frogs get too cold they’re die also, not just geckos.
We rehomed some tincs last year as got so cold they weren’t doing to great in outhouse. Now it’s all done up the colons are great and Williamsi!
Did you mean mourning geckos? Day geckos are a no go for dart frog cohabitation
Day geckos are fine to have in with frogs.
We have had tincs, terribilis, pumillio etc and had in peacocks, Klemmeri, gold dusts, williamsi.
Obviously the peacocks were in with the bigger types. Our Williamsi ‘William’ has been in with many different types of frogs.
We currently have pumillio and Williamsi together.
Keeping them together isn’t a no go. Myself and others have been doing this for years. They are perfectly fine to keep together.
