My bp bit himself?

So i was preparing a mouse for his dinner. I walked over to his enclosure, I was getting ready to hang the mouse down into the enclosure for him and i guess he saw it through the glass and somehow mistook his tail for the mouse? He then proceeded to strike at his tail and bite. Has anyone ever had a snake do this? Do yall think my poor derpy boy will be ok? I went ahead and fed him the mouse since he was obviously starved  so i dont wanna pick him up to inspect until 24 hours at least have passed.

Your boy isn’t the first, nor will he be the last snake to accidentally bite himself. If you’re worried about the area, some antibiotic ointment (without pain relief) is an easy treatment option. Basically the main thing is keeping an eye on him to be sure he’s healing properly, which most bites do without issue. Beautiful creatures, not a whole lot of brain cells at times. :joy:

Yep. big agree with Noodlehaus.
It happens, especially with young ones who don’t quite understand the way hunts work yet. Typically the bite won’t do much damage and heals up just fine. It’s not a larger wound like a rodent bite, so not as much of a risk of bacteria.
A little bit of diluted iodine dabbed with a q tip on the area can be another quick option, just because sometimes the antibiotic ointment can make snake scales act a little funky. Easy to give a little rinse off with a water mist later too.

Have you seen any injury to need treating?
How big is the snake?
I cant imagine a hatchling braking the skin through scales, but I might be wrong.
I have had the problem but im normally more worried about the self constriction than the bite.
I have never seen blood.
But thats all only based on just the few self bites I have seen.
