My first bioactive attempt

So, been working about the last couple months on getting Goku’s keep rebuilt as a bioactive. It has been a project, because I have very little idea what I’m doing, only so much knowledge and confidence can be obtained by reading, and I defiantly don’t have a green thumb. But I’ve let it settle in for the past month, with a uvb light running a good portion of the day and regular misting, and so far the plants seem to be happy? Which has me quite proud cause while I do well with most animals, I sometimes feel like plants wither just by my looking at them XP

The creeping fig that I’m hoping will climb the branch there was by far the most difficult to convince to live. The plant I have in there now is actually my second attempt, but as far as I can tell it’s thriving. Sent it’s roots nice and deep, finding the gap between the drainage fabric and the glass to get down to the rock layer. I hope that means it’s happy enough to stick around.

Put Goku in there yesterday, as the plants have been settling in for about a month. He seemed to hit confusion freak out mode, but he’s always a skittish gecko, and in his 5 years I’m pretty sure he’s never seen live plants.

Pretty sure thats the darkest I’ve seen him fired in some time.

I was a lil worried. There’s very little cover up high til the plants get some more time to grow, esp as I forgot to think of a backdrop when building it and by the time I was reminded that was a thing, I would’ve had to pull everything out and start from scratch to put something in well. Last night he was sticking to the very top of his wood climb, out in the open, even before I turned off the grow light, which was a touch irregular for him. But tonight he seems to have calmed down some and found a cranny in his decor to hide the daylight away. Still I’m considering returning him to his temp keep for a touch and seeing if I can affix a vining plant or two to the fork of the branch, some breif research makes it look like it might be possible with some moss and twine? But I’d take suggestions/corrections from more knowledgeable folks if there’s any to offer.

I have spring tails, Dwarf purple isopods, and some larger armadillidium sp. Isopods in there (and some fruitflies that moved in because they enjoy my torment despite all attempts to keep the house clear of them, but I don’t think they’ll hurt anything? I just wish they were the flightless variety XP). I only occasionally find a Dwarf isopod when I check the bug activity under the water dish, and I rarely see the larger isopods ( I think they favor hiding under the UFO which is hard to shift without troubling the plant I have coming out of it. What I get for being ‘creative’ I guess…) but im sure they’re around cause one or two come out to say hi on occasion. I’m not too worried about them with Goku, cause he’s shown a frustrating lack of prey drive. The springtails at least have exploded in number and seem to be taking to their job happily.

So mostly I’m showing off cause I’m proud of myself for actually managing this task, but if anyone sees anything I did obviously wrong, or that could be improved, I would happily take advice, as I’m an utter noob at this and it is a good bit out of my normal wheelhouse.

Oh woah, that looks great! Goku is a very handsome man as well. What morph is he?

I really want to try a bioactive someday, but i’m working with what I have for now:)

WellI I am definitely not an expert on anything bio or creating gecko habitats. That being said I do have 3 bio enclosures for my crestie, my gargoyle, and my false chameleon. But none of them are as thoughtfully put together as yours!

If I were you I would just add some temporary fake foliage at the top as well as another climbing branch or two. My crestie hangs out everywhere in his enclosure but he has coverage at the top especially because they tend to hang out up top.

Then when your vines/plants start to grow you can remove the fake ones. But I would leave the couple extra climbing branches……

I honestly have no clue what morph he is. I found him in a petstore and loved his awesome head crests, and was missing the geckos I used to have, so he came home. I’m planning on breeding him this coming year and am excited to see what interesting critters he produces. He is handsome~

While I’m thrilled y’all like the look of it, it does kinda amuse me to hear it described as lovingly thought out, as I’m pretty sure my thought process was stick plants around my favorite decor. I guess I’m kinda hoping it grows into an overgrown ancient aliens landing site XD and I did think it would look awesome to have the alien green vine coming out from the space ship. XD

But I’ll see about getting some fake plants up there for the time being. Hopefully the plants will grow into that space swiftly~ and I have some bamboo sticks I can put in there, at least for now, for climbs.

Well I have no clue about morphs other than my own geckos but for a pet store find he is a very nice looking little guy. I think he will make a very fine poppa!

Edit to add: Even though I said I thought he would make a fine poppa I should add that until you find out what morph he is you may get some critiques on breeding him………

He has a capp Vibe to him, he’s really cool.

Lol, I’m no big breeder, but if he was mine, I’d definitely try to prove out what he’s got going on. There’s lots of stuff going on with the Cappucino complex atm, not saying that he is or is not, but it would be interesting to know.

I’m aware of the critiques. And to an extent I understand them. But, while I’ve taken a good few years off, I am no stranger to gecko breeding and know I can take care of and find homes for the offspring, I know my boy is healthy even if of a mysterious lineage, and he’s pretty enough I truly think the world could do with a few more of him. People are free to disagree.

I agree, he does have a lot of the traits of capp complex I’ve seen, since I have been trying to look into what he might be. Certainly not going to claim that until I get a chance to prove him out in it, especially as I’ve yet to have a chance of seeing anything capp complex in person, but it’s certainly a thing I’m looking into. Whatever he is, I just hope many of his kids get this white tipped headcrests. I’m as obsessed with those today as I was the day I found him, maybe more, and they aren’t a common trait.

I apologize about the breeding comment. I suppose I was trying to warn the choir! :joy: I wish you the very best in your endeavors!

Lol, I don’t mind at all, it is a fair warning to spread.

Looking good so far, definitely need a lot more branches, up top too and even a cork tube would be ideal as they love them!

He’s a tricolour pin dash with dal spots too

Doesn’t look like a capp imo, their oranges are typically more vibrant, and the white is very popping, and reduced on the dorsal unlike his - he reminds me of my boy Arlo

Like Ghoulish said, he seems to be a tricolour, partial pinstripe, with dalspots and head fringing

There’s no harm in breeding him if you want to know more, tons of people don’t know what their gecko’s actual morph is before pairing since all the genetics stuff is so new, there’s still a ton of oddball geckos out there. Just make sure you have the space, cause the market isn’t the greatest atm

As for the enclosure, I think everything has been said already, it’s a nice start, but needs more hides, branches, and cover, especially further up

I love the Viv and I’m not familiar at all with cresties, but yours definitely looks happy in it’s enclosure!

Regardless of what he is or isn’t, I adore his look and coloration and am eager to see how his traits pass on and combine with others. But that is a future query, as any pairings with him are not to happen til at least spring.

I did add some more climbs and some fake foliage up high. This is a quick fix for now, just what I could cobble together in the breif spare time I have between work and sleep, I’ll improve it/make it longer term come Monday when I get a day off. (there is much I love about 12 hr night shifts. 4 nights in a row over a weekend is not among them XP)

He was… Not thrilled with my intrusion, but settled in to hide when I had to leave for work. Hopefully he’ll appreciate the extra cover tonight.

That looks great my dear! He will appreciate the extra coverage! He is a cutie patootie btw!

That looks much better

I’m sure he’s pleased, despite the intrusion lol

I find it so funny when I get a new gecko and introduce them to a bioactive enclosure, they look so confused :joy:

A few days or so in, and he seems to be enjoying his keep. Much more curious and and active than he used to be, in what as far as I can tell is a good way.
