they are both very active right now too one of them is even trying to climb up the wire of the thermometer lol
Babies have energy I envy, haha.
they sure do lol.
Ive put in the new hides and filled them with sphagnum moss.
ATM they seem to think that the hides are for climbing only
Good, let them work up an appetite!
sure will, I’ve also left the food under where the heat mat is so hopefully the smell gets them to eat.
Also, just so you know, it’s still super early to expect them to eat! I usually try to make myself wait a full week after their first shed before offering food. Sometimes I’ll try earlier than that if they appear to be out hunting. I have the best success with new babies with placing them in a deli cup, in the evening, in a dark room or closet. Heat up the pinkie using very hot water (or boiling), drop it in with them and then just leave them totally alone, no peeking, for an hour. If they haven’t eaten by then, reheat the pinkie, and leave it with them overnight. There are lots of other tricks you can try if they’re being stubborn, but I would try that method at least a couple times, with 3 or 4 days in between attempts.
Ill probably try that next week then if they don’t eat. Thanks for the help!
Beauts there @noodlehaus! Congratulations!
If they don’t eat this time, do as @solarserpents suggested. Put each one in a deli cup or something comparable like a small Tupperware container and drop in a pinky that has been defrosted in very hot water and dabbed briefly with a paper towel to dry. Put the containers in a closet and close the door. Do no disturb for at least 30 minutes. Maybe 45 if you can stand it.
But before you try this method wait a FULL week. If they don’t eat, repeat this method in another week. I have done this and it works trust me!
And remember, in the wild, if a predator catches a small snake eating out in the open, that little snake is very vulnerable and will make an easy target
for the predator. That’s why snakes, especially babies, have to feel totally safe and protected before it will eat. If that makes sense…….
Keep everyone updated!
Unfortunately niether of them ate overnight but at least they are using the hides now. Ill wait until next week before offering more food.
Seriously try the deli cups in the dark with warm warm warm pinks!
Sure will! Ive also decided names for these two. The larger one is pebbles and the smaller one is BamBam
Actually @solarserpents fed a couple of their new babies with boiled and washed pinks.
I love the names Pebbles and Bam Bam! So cute!
Thanks! Ill also attempt another feeding on friday so hopefully they decide to eat this time
Don’t stress about it too much! They will eat eventually I promise!
I’ve been kind of incommunicado, not where I was able to keep up. Sorry, @shadowspiderjack . Your babies are so cute! Nice to see more pics.
Don’t stress about them not eating yet. Healthy babies don’t hatch hungry; they get a nice energy boost from their yolk just before they hatch. The tough thing for we humans is leaving the adorable babies alone in the early days. It’s hard!
Next time you offer, try putting each baby with its intended ft warm meal into a deli cup (with a lid) or something similar. Like @solarserpents, I use deli cups with babies. Their being in a small space with nothing else to think about and nowhere else to go helps them to start feeding. I give them an hour, then reheat any uneaten pinks in hot tap water for a couple minutes. Then I cover the deli and leave the room for 2 hours. Anything uneaten at that point gets tossed. I don’t start trying other tricks until/unless they’ve refused 3 successive feedings. Hopefully you won’t have to worry about that.
Congrats again on the pretty little ones.
Thanks! I’ll likely try another feeding on friday or saturday so hopefully they are hungry by then and start eating! Also for the smaller one would it be better to give it half a pinky or the head?
