Na spinoderma tail asked for help. It has been raised for about 1 year. A few days ago, it was found that there were swelling on both sides of his lower jaw. The food was white cricket, and the tonic was calcium powder that did not contain d3 (because our country is not very convincing about the breeding and life of na and other special niche crawling pets. Do you need calcium powder containing d3 for nocturnal sex? Is it?) Thank you
I apologize if this is difficult to translate.
Swelling in the jaw is a very common presentation with Metabolic Bone Disease in leopard geckos, iguanas and bearded dragons.
Do you have a photo of your lizard so we can see the body condition?
Other signs of MBD can be swelling in the ankles and wrists, difficulty eating from a weakened jaw, or bending in the longer bones of the legs.
I always supplement my leopard geckos, a more nocturnal species, with a vitamin blend that includes D3 1-2x a week. Otherwise, I leave regular calcium out for them to lick at whenever they need it.
While some people have disagreed with the need to supplement D3 in some nocturnal animals, not every prey item we provide may meet requirements they get in the wild.
If this isn’t a case of MDB because of a lack of D3 to metabolize calcium, there are other vitamin deficiencies that can sometimes present with a swelling around the eyes or ears of some reptiles.
I would definitely consider a vet exam to really get an idea of what may be going on and possibly receive vitamin injections to help them sooner, especially if they aren’t eating as regularly now.
I’m sorry to heat about your animal’s troubles, @chenmao . I don’t work with the species, and as can’t add to the advice you’ve gotten so far. I did add a “health” tag to your topic in hopes that this may help you get more eyes on this. I wish you the best of luck.
